Tencent QQ's 20-years-of-data 'personal trajectory' H5 — viral within hours

For QQ's 20th birthday, Tencent turns each user's two decades of chats into a shareable space-themed 'personal trajectory' H5.

What it had to solve

In 2019 QQ was 20 years old, but social life had largely moved to WeChat. The team needed a birthday moment that made old users feel their QQ years mattered — without paid media.

How it works

On May 27, 2019, for QQ's 20th anniversary, Tencent released 'QQ Personal Trajectory' (QQ个人轨迹), an H5 that pulled each user's private QQ history — first login date, avatar changes, groups, Q-zone visits, Q-age — and turned it into a personalized, space-themed card. Instead of telling users how great QQ was, the product let users rediscover their own two decades of internet life.

Tencent's in-house design team ISUX spent about two months on the H5: five themed pages, retro visual symbols (old dialogue boxes, pagers, pixel arrows), five 3D 'space QQ' mascots whose rarity tiers depended on the user's Q-age, and share cards designed to trigger the urge to post.

The H5 went viral on WeChat Moments within hours and briefly tripped WeChat's anti-share block, which was lifted quickly and only added to the coverage. Media and case-study sites treated it as the canonical example of 'nostalgia-kill' marketing, and Tencent published a first-party design retrospective in June 2019.

Why it lands

  • It used each user's own real history, so every share was unique and deeply personal — a story users wanted to show off.
  • The H5 framed a brand milestone as a user achievement (Q-age, sun/moon levels, rare space QQs), giving status worth sharing.
  • It needed almost no paid media: WeChat Moments was the distribution channel, and the brief block itself added buzz.
  • Retro visuals — original QQ interface, dialogs, beepers — triggered collective memory of the PC-internet era in a single glance.

What it did

Released the evening of May 27, 2019, it flooded WeChat Moments within hours and briefly tripped WeChat's share-protection block, which only added coverage; press and case sites turned it into the reference example of Chinese 'nostalgia-kill' (回忆杀) marketing.

What you can take

Users' own data is a platform's most shareable asset: an anniversary H5 that lets people rediscover their history beats any brand-written story — but only if the product has decades of real data.

Since then

The H5 became a textbook case for Chinese 'memory-kill' marketing and was widely imitated by brands with long user histories; Tencent's ISUX blog post documenting the design has remained a reference. It did not reverse QQ's user shift toward WeChat, but it re-established QQ's emotional place in users' lives and gave the team a repeatable playbook for anniversary moments built on personal data.
