NetEase Cloud Music's annual listening report floods WeChat Moments — every app copies it

NetEase Cloud Music turned each user's year of listening into a shareable H5; it swept WeChat Moments and became every app's year-end template.

The ideaTurn a year of listening data into a personalized shareable H5 report — songs, top artist, the day you looped one — so users' own data tells their story.substantial

What it had to solve

In China's music market, NetEase Cloud Music (launched 2013) competed on community and emotional attachment rather than catalog size. For the 2018 New Year, it wanted a campaign that made users feel understood — and willing to share that feeling with friends.

How it works

In early January 2018, WeChat Moments was swept by 'Hi, your 2017 annual listening report', an H5 from NetEase Cloud Music (网易云音乐). Using each user's own listening history, it reported how many songs they had played, which song and artist dominated their year, the day they looped a track most, and even their late-night listening habits, presented in warm, illustrated pages.

The idea was to treat the marketing campaign like a product: data already inside the platform became a personal, emotional self-portrait. Digitaling's (数英) case study quoted VP Li Yin on the underlying principle — 'marketing as product thinking' — and noted the report was part of a New Year plan that also included an in-app snowfall effect and the brand film 'The Power of Music 2018'.

The report became the year's first viral H5 and a cultural marker: Nanfang Daily (南方日报) argued it moved music into a 'social era', and 'music social' was later named among 2017's Chinese cultural buzzwords. Competitors copied the format within months, and by 2022 annual user reports were the default year-end campaign for apps from Weibo and Bilibili to Meituan and Amap.

Why it lands

  • Personal data makes the message true for every single user — no two reports are the same, so everyone has something of their own to share.
  • Emotional packaging turns dry statistics into identity — 'this is who I am and what I love' — which is exactly what people put on social media.
  • The shareable card gives users a ready-made social object, so the campaign spreads without paid media.
  • An annual calendar moment gives the ritual a natural recurring date — users now expect the report every January.

What it did

The report flooded WeChat Moments on its first day; Nanfang Daily (南方日报), via People's Daily Online (人民网), called it the New Year's 'first warmth' and tied it to 'music social' being named a 2017 cultural buzzword. Within a few years the format became mandatory year-end marketing for nearly every major Chinese app.

What you can take

Give users a shareable artifact made from their own behavior data — 'we know you' is the message, and users become the distribution channel. The medium costs little; the insight is everything.

Since then

NetEase Cloud Music repeated the report every year, adding new angles (2019, 2020 and beyond), and the format was adopted by apps across industries. Digitaling's (数英) later recap wrote that behavior-report marketing, which began with NetEase Cloud Music's annual reports, had become nearly every app's required year-end activity. The campaign also reinforced the platform's community positioning and burnished its reputation as a 'viral H5 machine' while it competed with much larger music apps.
