Porsche's Sportmade film reunites the 911 Dakar with its 1984 rally winner
For the 911 Dakar launch, Porsche staged a sandstorm meeting between the 1984 Paris-Dakar-winning 953 and its modern successor, music-video style.

What it had to solve
A sports car on one of the toughest rallies in the world was unthinkable — until Porsche sent a modified 911, the 953, to the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1984 and won. The new 911 Dakar, a limited edition paying homage to that legendary car, needed a launch story worthy of the lineage.
How it works
A sports car on one of the toughest rallies in the world? It was unthinkable, until Porsche came along in 1984 and sent the Porsche 953 — a modified 911 — to the Paris-Dakar Rally, and won.
Now Porsche has released the 911 Dakar: a limited edition version of the current 911 that pays homage to the legendary 953. To mark the occasion, the brand released an online film.
In the film, the old 953 meets its modern successor in a sandstorm, shot in the style of a music video. Both vehicles showcase their rally DNA on an exhilarating drive through the desert.
The launch became a story about lineage rather than a conventional product reveal — the champion of the world's toughest rally passing the desert to its heir. The work is preserved in D&AD's awards archive.
Why it lands
- Heritage is the 911 Dakar's whole argument, so the film dramatises the 1984 victory instead of listing specifications.
- Meeting inside a sandstorm gives the two cars a shared stage where old and new read as equals.
- The music-video treatment makes a brand film feel like content people choose to watch.
- Putting the ancestor in the frame lets the legendary car's credibility flow to the newcomer.
What it did
The film turned a spec-sheet launch into a story about lineage, and the work is preserved in D&AD's awards archive.
What you can take
For a product whose whole argument is heritage, launch with a story that crosses time: putting ancestor and successor in one frame transfers the legend to the newcomer.
Since then
Sportmade — The new 911 Dakar became the launch storytelling for Porsche's limited-edition rally 911 and is preserved in D&AD's awards archive. The format, a music-video-style desert meeting between the champion ancestor and its modern heir, is what other heritage launches can borrow when a product's only real feature is its history.
