Physical Phones: a viral Bluetooth landline sells $789K in its first year
A creator hacked a vintage handset into a Bluetooth landline to escape her screen; pre-orders funded the launch and it sold $789K in 2025.
Physical Phones
What it had to solve
Goetze wanted landline calls but balked at the $80-a-month service she was quoted. A 2023 prototype went nowhere; by 2025 her digital-wellness audience had caught up, so she posted it again and opened pre-orders.
How it works
Cat Goetze, a Stanford-trained content creator in Los Angeles, wanted the feeling of landline calls she remembered from childhood but was quoted $80 a month to install a real line. So in 2023 she hacked a Bluetooth antenna into a thrifted pink handset and posted the prototype online — where it got almost no attention.
Two years later, with a following built around AI and digital wellness, she posted the idea again. The July 2025 video drew more than 8 million views across Instagram and TikTok, and Physical Phones passed $120,000 in pre-orders in its first three days. The phones pair with a smartphone over Bluetooth, ring for calls from WhatsApp, FaceTime and the cellular network, and even use the phone's voice assistant for dialing.
Pre-order revenue funded the first production run, including warehousing, shipping and a small team. By the end of 2025 the business had sold more than 7,500 devices, recorded about $789,000 in sales and roughly $439,000 in profit, and delivered 4,000 orders in time for Christmas — flying them in from Asia at a cost of nearly $74,000 to keep that promise.
Why it lands
- The product monetizes a craving — analog, screen-free calls — that technology itself created, so demand arrived before any marketing push.
- Creator-led pre-orders turned fans into funders, covering manufacturing and logistics without investors or debt.
- A real vintage form factor with modern Bluetooth gave nostalgic aesthetics an actual function, not just a prop.
- A failed 2023 launch became a 2025 hit when cultural timing caught up — the idea was right, the moment was early.
What it did
Within 72 hours pre-orders passed $120,000; 2025 revenue reached $789,000 with roughly $439,000 in profit and 7,500+ devices sold, all funded by customers rather than loans or outside capital.
What you can take
If your audience already feels the problem, pre-orders can fund production: the product is tested and paid for before inventory exists, with no loans or savings required.
Since then
After the first production round, Goetze brought in a CEO to run day-to-day operations and kept a four-person team, reinvesting 2025 profits into research and development for new models. As of early 2026 she was exploring retail distribution, and planning Cat Labs, a creator-first product studio for building similar products from her audience's desires.
