How it works
Analogue, the Seattle company known for hardware-accurate recreations of the NES, SNES, Genesis and Game Boy, turned its attention to the hardest console of all: the N64. Revealed in detail in October 2024, the Analogue 3D plays original N64 cartridges on modern televisions — with 100 percent compatibility, region-free, and no emulation.
The bet was that the N64's problems could not be solved in software. The console's rendering was inseparable from the CRT displays of its era, and emulators had never delivered clean compatibility across its whole library. Analogue's answer was an FPGA: a chip rewired at the circuit level to behave exactly like the original machine, running cartridges directly with original timing.
On top of that hardware it added a bespoke 4K upscaler and "Original Display Modes" that reproduce the look of a CRT — phosphor glow, scanlines, shadow masks — because Analogue argues the N64 experience is defined as much by the display as by the game. Four original-style controller ports let players plug in real N64 pads, while 8BitDo contributed a modern wireless recreation with a Hall-effect stick.
