o2 HomeBox 4: the repairable Wi-Fi 7 router that won Red Dot Best of the Best 2026

What it had to solve

German broadband customers hesitated to move from DSL to fiber partly because upgrading meant replacing the router — extra cost, setup and e-waste. Telefónica wanted one home router that served both connections, used fewer resources, and read as honest, durable hardware rather than a disposable tech box.

How it works

In May 2026, o2 (Telefónica Deutschland) put the HomeBox 4 on the German market: a Wi-Fi 7 router that works on both DSL and fiber, with an integrated fiber modem so customers switching technologies keep the same device. It sells as a €4.99-per-month rental for all Internet@Home tariffs, with zero-touch setup and self-optimising Wi-Fi.

The design idea came from Design3: instead of hiding the technology, the router's visible cooling architecture became its defining feature. A single-material shell, reduced component count and quick disassembly make it lighter, repairable and easier to refurbish. About 62% of materials are recycled, an inactivity mode cuts standby power, and the packaging is FSC-certified recycled cardboard that doubles as the shipping carton with the quick guide printed on it.

The design-first approach was recognised before and after launch: the International Green Product Award and TÜV 'Green Product' certification came first, then Red Dot 2026 awarded the router four prizes, including Best of the Best in both Product Design and Sustainable Design. Telefónica called the project the starting point of its sustainability strategy in hardware development.

Why it lands

  • It removed a real switching friction: one device works on DSL and fiber, so upgrading no longer means replacing the router.
  • It made sustainability visible — the cooling architecture is the product's signature, so honesty becomes the aesthetic.
  • It was designed for the full lifecycle: fewer parts, quick disassembly, repairs, refurbishment, and a rental model that returns devices for reuse.
  • The idea extended to packaging: a recycled box that serves as shipping carton with the guide printed on it, eliminating extra paper.
  • Braille markings on the device add accessibility to the sustainability story.

What it did

The router won the International Green Product Award and TÜV 'Green Product' certification before launch, then took four Red Dot 2026 prizes — Best of the Best in Product Design and in Sustainable Design, plus Red Dot awards for the packaging and packaging sustainability — as a €4.99/month rental product.
