Norwich Castle rebuilds its brand around a cube logo that sets every layout

Norwich Castle's new mark is a cube drawn from the castle's own form, and its geometry sets a nine-column grid so all branding shares one square system.

What it had to solve

Norwich Castle is instantly recognisable because its physical form resembles a cube. It needed an identity simple enough to work as one coherent system across all its branding.

How it works

Norwich Castle is a landmark whose physical form resembles a cube, instantly recognisable and memorable. Its rebrand started from that fact instead of from pictures of the building.

The result is an uncompromisingly simple mark: in isolation the core logo is understated and intentionally unembellished. The precise geometry of the logo directly informs a functional nine-column grid system, referencing the number of merlons on each aspect of the castle.

The entire design system is modular, formed by squares, which makes it simple, easy-to-use and coherent. Thanks to the daring simplicity of the logo, the brand collateral designs itself.

One geometry therefore runs from the mark through layout and structure, giving a centuries-old institution a brand system that stays coherent wherever it appears. The work is held in the D&AD awards archive.

Why it lands

  • It starts from what people already recognise — the cube — so the mark is memorable before the name is even read.
  • Letting the logo's geometry set the grid, nine columns for the castle's merlons, makes structure and identity one idea rather than two systems.
  • A modular system of squares is easy to use, so the brand stays coherent without a designer redrawing each piece from scratch.
  • Understatement protects the mark from trend-driven decoration, which suits an institution that expects to keep its identity for decades.

What it did

The identity gives a memorable, understated mark plus a system where the brand collateral designs itself from the same geometry, instead of every piece being art-directed separately. The work is held in the D&AD awards archive.

What you can take

Give one strong form the job of carrying geometry and structure: when the logo sets the grid, every future piece of collateral follows the same rule and the system stays coherent.

Since then

The identity gives Norwich Castle one coherent brand system built from the castle's own geometry. Because every layout derives from the logo's grid, new collateral can be produced consistently by following the system rather than inventing designs; the work is held in the D&AD awards archive.
