Nike's Breaking2 turns a sub-2-hour marathon attempt into a live global event — 2:00:25

W+K staged Nike's moonshot as a live-streamed event: three runners chase the two-hour marathon on a Formula 1 track.

What it had to solve

Nike had backed breaking the two-hour marathon since 2014 and wanted the attempt to engage a new generation of runners; W+K's brief was to make the project itself the media.

How it works

In late 2016, Nike and W+K announced Breaking2: three of the world's best marathoners would try to run the first sub-2-hour marathon — a barrier that meant beating the existing record by about three minutes.

The project was half science lab, half spectacle. The runners wore prototype Zoom Vaporfly Elite shoes with carbon-fibre plates, trained with a team of physiologists, and raced on Monza's Formula 1 track with pace cars and rotating pacers — all staged and live-streamed by Nike as owned content.

On May 6, 2017, Eliud Kipchoge finished in 2:00:25, the fastest marathon ever run but short of the two-hour goal. Nike broadcast the attempt live across YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, and National Geographic later released a documentary on the project.

Why it lands

  • An impossible goal is inherently newsworthy, so coverage began months before the event.
  • Live distribution let millions feel present at a historic moment rather than watch an ad.
  • The attempt made product innovation (the Vaporfly shoe) the plot, not a feature list.
  • A near-miss extended the narrative for years and kept the brand inside the story.

What it did

Kipchoge ran 2:00:25, the fastest marathon ever at the time; the live stream drew over 5.2 million Facebook views and 486,000+ YouTube views, and the project became a landmark of brand-as-publisher content.

What you can take

A brave public bet on an impossible goal can make even a near-miss priceless: the attempt itself is the campaign, and failure keeps the story running.

Since then

Kipchoge set the official world record in 2018 (2:01:39) and ran 1:59:40 in the 2019 INEOS 1:59 Challenge; Nike's Vaporfly line dominated marathon racing for years. Breaking2 is now taught as a case of brands owning moments instead of buying reach.
