Cif takes the 'clean my name' joke literally — Serasa deal settles R$7M in debt

For years Brazilians joked that Cif cleans everything except their credit record; Unilever made it real, funding debt renegotiation through Serasa.

Cif (Unilever Brasil)

The ideaTake the fan joke literally — 'if Cif cleans everything, it can clean your name too': receipts from Cif buys unlock Serasa debt renegotiation that makes the joke true.substantial

What it had to solve

In Brazil, unpaid debts land people on credit bureaus with a 'sujo' (dirty) name — a problem more than half the country faces. Since 2021, consumers had been writing on Cif's social channels that the brand cleans everything, 'só falta limpar meu nome' (only my name is left), in a meme that kept growing as Cif watched.

How it works

In Brazil, unpaid debt means a 'sujo' (dirty) name on the credit system — a problem more than half the country faces. Since 2021, Cif's social channels kept receiving the same joke: the brand cleans everything, so 'só falta limpar meu nome' (only cleaning my name is left). It showed up as pleas, memes and friends tagging each other, and Cif noticed the volume growing.

Cif and agency Droga5 São Paulo answered the joke with a real solution. In a partnership with Serasa Experian, Brazil's debt-renegotiation platform, consumers who bought participating Cif products and registered their receipts were entered into daily and weekly draws of R$500 and R$1,000 and directed to the Serasa platform to renegotiate their debts. The money came from the brand's usual point-of-sale price-promotion budget, so the cost resembled a normal discount campaign.

The campaign ran from 15 March to 30 April 2026 and was amplified with a TV film in Big Brother Brasil breaks, personalized out-of-home featuring real Brazilians' names, regional and digital activations, and creators Gil do Vigor and Nath Finanças. Unilever Home Care marketing director Gabriela Lairana said the recurring comment triggered an alert that it was a topic gaining scale, which the brand turned into a concrete solution.

According to the case released in May 2026, R$7 million in debts were renegotiated during the period, 202,000 consumers registered, 139,000 interacted with Serasa via the promotion, and Cif Limpeza Milagrosa sales rose 15.6% versus the same period the year before. The work won four Lions at Cannes 2026 — Gold and Silver in Brand Experience & Activation, Bronze in Creative Commerce and Bronze in Social & Creators.

Why it lands

  • The insight came from the brand's own comment section, where the joke had been recurring and growing since 2021, so the campaign answered an audience request instead of inventing one.
  • The pun was semantically perfect: cleaning a credit history is literally 'cleaning your name', so the brand promise and the social problem shared one verb.
  • Redirecting price-promotion money meant the brand spent no more than on a conventional discount while solving a real, mass-scale problem — 202,000 people registered.
  • The partnership put Cif at the start of a genuinely useful flow: buy the product, then get guided toward renegotiating debt, which made the meme into a service.

What it did

The campaign's case reports R$7 million in debts renegotiated, 2.7 million visits to the promo site, 202,000 registered participants, 139,000 consumers interacting with Serasa via the promo, 380 tonnes of product distributed across 489 stores, 11.3 million organic impressions, 146,000 engagements and over 65,000 mentions on X during launch, plus more than 300 press mentions. Cif Limpeza Milagrosa sales grew 15.6% versus the same period a year earlier, and Cannes Lions 2026 gave the work Gold and Silver in Brand Experience & Activation, Bronze in Creative Commerce and Bronze in Social & Creators.

What you can take

A recurring joke in the comments is a demand in disguise: instead of selling harder, spend the promo budget on the problem people keep asking you to solve.

Since then

The campaign closed with a case released in May 2026: R$7 million in negotiated debt, 2.7 million visits to the promo site, and a 15.6% sales lift for Cif Limpeza Milagrosa versus the prior-year period. Cannes Lions 2026 gave it Gold and Silver in Brand Experience & Activation plus Bronze in Creative Commerce and Social & Creators. Droga5 São Paulo described it as another step in positioning Cif as cleaning 'imaginary surfaces' — after work on 'dirty mouths', the meme about dirty names became the next real surface to clean.
