Cologuard parodies colonoscopy dread to make at-home screening the easy choice

'Skip the Drama' casts colonoscopy's anxiety, prep and lack of control as comedy, so Cologuard's at-home test reads as the drama-free way to screen.

Exact Sciences (Cologuard)

The ideaTurn each reason people avoid colonoscopies into an over-the-top drama, then let Cologuard's at-home test be the punchline: skip the drama and still screen.substantial

What it had to solve

Screening for colon cancer carries real drama for many people — anxiety, the preparation and a feeling of losing control. Cologuard, Exact Sciences' at-home screening test, needed to persuade a younger, screening-anxious crowd that they could screen for colon cancer without that drama.

How it works

Colon cancer screening saves lives, but getting there feels dramatic to many people: anxiety about the procedure, the dreaded preparation and a sense of losing control. With Cologuard, an at-home stool-based test from Exact Sciences, screening can be drama-free — the campaign's job was to make younger, screening-anxious adults believe that.

'Skip the Drama' launched as a series of films and short videos built around comic characters, including a bombastic medieval king and rich housewives. Instead of lecturing about screening, each execution theatrically dispelled one of the fears that keep people from doing it.

Every spot landed on the same logic: with Cologuard you can skip the drama of colonoscopy and still be screened for colon cancer. The launch work is archived in D&AD's awards archive.

Why it lands

  • The drama was real and specific — anxiety, preparation and lack of control — so each film could dismantle one barrier instead of arguing against screening in general.
  • Bombastic characters borrowed from popular culture made a taboo medical subject watchable and easy to share with a younger, screening-anxious audience.
  • Positioning Cologuard as the way to skip the drama made the at-home test the resolution of the joke, not a second product claim.

What it did

The series turned a feared procedure into popular-culture comedy and gave younger adults a reason to screen at home instead of avoiding it; the launch is archived in D&AD's awards archive.

What you can take

When fear is the barrier, exaggerate it into farce: once the dread is laughable, the low-drama alternative becomes the obvious choice.

Since then

The campaign is archived in D&AD's awards archive, where the film series stands as an example of selling a screening test by giving its biggest objection — the drama — the starring role.
