MUJI's campground posters are mosaics of 560 real 30mm wood cubes

To sell the joy of camping, studio Garden cut trees into 30mm cubes and arranged 560 pieces into pictures of the animals and plants found on campgrounds.

What it had to solve

MUJI's campgrounds promise immersion in nature — an enriching, exciting experience — and the brand's pictures had to carry that feeling rather than state it in words.

How it works

MUJI's campgrounds sell being immersed in nature — an enriching, exciting escape. The question for the brand's imagery was how to make that feeling of the outdoors appear in a picture rather than describe it in words.

Garden, the studio behind the work, answered with the material itself: it cut several kinds of trees into 30mm square cubes and arranged 560 pieces into pictures of the animals and plants seen in the campgrounds. Each mosaic is a piece of the woods rearranged.

The result is a poster that carries camping in its medium — not a photograph of nature, but nature cut, counted and placed by hand. The work was shortlisted at D&AD and is preserved in the D&AD awards archive, which records no reach or sales figures.

Why it lands

  • Making the poster from real cut wood lets the medium say 'nature' before the viewer reads a word.
  • Thirty-millimetre cubes give each image a chunky, tactile mosaic look that reads as craft, not stock imagery.
  • The pictures show animals and plants actually seen in campgrounds, so the work stays specific to MUJI's world.
  • The material metaphor — an ad about camping made of trees — makes the idea legible in any language.

What it did

The work reached the D&AD shortlist (Annual 2022) and is preserved in the D&AD awards archive, which records no reach or sales figures; the campaign is remembered for its material idea rather than a measured result.

What you can take

When the thing you sell is an experience of nature, build the ad from the material itself — an image made of 560 real wood cubes says more about a campground than any photo caption.

Since then

The posters were shortlisted at D&AD in 2022 and are preserved in the D&AD awards archive, which records no reach or sales figures. What remains is the template: when the product is an experience of nature, spend the craft on the material itself — an ad for camping made from 560 pieces of real wood.
