FamilyMart's teary-eyed 'SAVE ME' sticker lifts discount-food sales and cuts waste 2,500t
Japan's FamilyMart swaps plain yen-off labels for a teary-eyed onigiri pleading 'SAVE ME' — purchase rate up 5 points, 2,500 tons of food loss cut in a year.

What it had to solve
Japanese convenience stores discard huge volumes of near-expiry food, and most consumers say they want less waste — yet many avoid discounted items because buying them feels embarrassing. FamilyMart's existing eco-discount labels only showed the yen amount.
How it works
Japanese convenience stores throw away enormous quantities of near-expiry food, and surveys consistently find over 90% of consumers want to reduce food waste. The barrier is social: buying discounted food can feel like losing face, so shoppers skip the label even when they support the cause.
FamilyMart and The Breakthrough Company GO kept the price cut but redesigned the sticker: a tearful onigiri with the message 'please help me' (たすけてください). The character was chosen from several illustrations tested with consumer panels, on the logic that empathy at the shelf beats a purely transactional number.
An October 2024 pilot in Tokyo and Kanagawa lifted purchase rates by 5 points against the old design. FamilyMart improved the artwork — bigger face, clearer message — and went nationwide in March 2025.
One year of the nationwide rollout cut food loss by about 2,500 tons and, on the Decabo Score metric, CO2 by roughly 10%. In October 2025 FamilyMart gave the character designs away free to any food business, adding bread, meat, fish and cake versions so supermarkets and bakeries could use them too.
Why it lands
- The discount stays a discount — only its meaning changes, from 'cheap' to 'helpful.'
- Putting the plea on the food itself makes the waste problem visible at the exact decision moment.
- Emotion beats price framing: consumers pick products that let them feel like rescuers.
- Releasing the design free multiplied the idea far beyond one chain.
What it did
The pilot lifted purchase rate 5 points versus the old label; after nationwide rollout FamilyMart reports about 2,500 tons of food loss cut in one year and roughly 10% CO2 reduction, plus 13 awards — among them ADFEST 2026 Creative Strategy Gold and ACC 2025 PR Gold.
What you can take
Change the meaning of the discount, not the discount itself: when a price cut becomes a small act of kindness, consumers buy it — and other retailers copy it.
Since then
FamilyMart kept the teary-eyed character and expanded it with bread, meat, fish and cake variants when the design was opened to all retailers in October 2025. By June 2026 the initiative had collected 13 awards, including ADFEST 2026 Creative Strategy Gold, ACC 2025 PR Gold and the Ministry of the Environment's Sustainable Design Award, and the sticker became a reference point for food-waste campaigns across Japan.
