Meituan sells reunion by filming Hu Ge's farewells — 370M views
Instead of another CNY reunion ad, Meituan's Hu Ge film says goodbye on a station platform in one take — 370M+ exposure in the 2025 holiday
Meituan (美团)
What it had to solve
Every Chinese New Year brand sells reunion, so Meituan needed a Hu Ge film that stood out in the crowded holiday-ad battlefield while landing its 'more stores, more savings' message.
How it works
For Chinese New Year 2025, Meituan's agency PAWPAW made a deliberately 'mistimed' film. Instead of the season's standard homecoming story, actor Hu Ge says goodbye - on a station platform he walks past parents in nine different family scenes, leaving each one, and in the film's controversial final beat returns for one more reunion that realism says cannot happen.
The idea rested on a contrarian insight: the moment people feel the ache of reunion most is not when they arrive home but when they leave it - seeing grandparents at the gate or a parent's car drive away. So the film tells the story of saying goodbye to make families spend their limited time together better, with Meituan positioned as the way to make that time count.
The execution was as risky as the idea. The two-minute-eight-second single take was assembled from separate shoots: Hu Ge performed alone against a green screen while the 'parents' were filmed in nine states on a 40-meter moco track, then composited in roughly ten layers - meaning every look and gesture had to land within half a second with no scene partner present.
Agency-reported impact: the film passed 100,000 views on its primary channel within a day, spilled organically across Douyin, Kuaishou, Xiaohongshu and Bilibili with 370M+ total exposure, and generated wide commentary about its ending. It won the 2025 Golden Mouse gold for best commercial short video and four silvers across creative and original-content categories.
Why it lands
- The strategy inverts a saturated genre at exactly the moment the emotion is strongest - departure, not arrival - which makes a category-cliche feel like a fresh truth.
- The one-take ambition is not decoration: shooting Hu Ge and the parents separately and compositing ten layers makes the emotional premise physically visible, and the making-of spread on its own.
- The open ending - Hu Ge inexplicably returning - was kept against internal debate, turning an illogical plot beat into the most discussed element of the campaign.
- The reach is documented: 100K views in 24 hours, 370M+ total exposure, 2M+ spillover, plus five Golden Mouse awards.
What it did
Agency-reported results: 100K+ views on the primary channel within 24 hours, organic reposting to Douyin, Kuaishou, Xiaohongshu and Bilibili, 370M+ total exposure and 2M+ spillover; the work won the 2025 Golden Mouse (金瞳奖) gold for best commercial short video plus four silvers.
What you can take
When a category's message is saturated, walk to the opposite emotional pole of the same truth - the strongest wish for reunion is felt at departure - and let the craft carry the conviction.
Since then
After its January 24, 2025 launch, the film circulated as one of the most discussed Chinese New Year campaigns of the season, with industry commentary focused on the reversed insight and the compositing craft. It was entered in the 2025 DIGITALING Awards (bronze in video production) and won the 2025 Golden Mouse gold for best commercial short video together with four silvers. PAWPAW published the full case, including making-of footage, on DIGITALING, and Chinese marketing retrospectives continue to cite the film as the reference example of reverse-positioning a ritual holiday message.
