Keep's 2019 'Fear Is Right' film reframes fear as motivation — 28.6M Weibo topic reads

Five real Keep members say 'I'm afraid, but I'm more afraid of never trying' — fear becomes the brand's motivation engine.

Keep

The ideaAdmit fear out loud: real members say 'I'm afraid… but I'm more afraid of never trying' — fear becomes the reason to keep moving, not the excuse to quit.substantial

What it had to solve

Keep's 2019 brief was to re-energize lapsed users under its '自律给我自由' (Discipline brings freedom) brand line. Research showed people quit not from laziness but from fear — of pain, judgment, failure, height, safety.

How it works

In May 2019, Chinese fitness app Keep released 《怕就对了》 ('Fear Is Right'), a 90-second film built on a counterintuitive line: stop pretending you are fearless. The campaign sat under Keep's brand line '自律给我自由' (Discipline brings freedom) and aimed to bring lapsed users back.

Agency KARMA selected five real Keep members — a plus-size yoga lover afraid of being stared at, a blind runner afraid of losing safety, a champion cyclist afraid of failure, a swimming elder afraid of his own competitiveness, and a diving girl afraid of the 10-meter platform. Each opens with '我怕…' (I'm afraid…), then turns it with '但我更怕…' (but I'm more afraid of…). The voiceover starts trembling and builds into a chorus.

The film drew more than a million full views and 28.6 million Weibo topic reads, generated over 30,000 user posts inside Keep, and won Gold at the 2019 金投赏 and the 2020 数英奖 film category. It became one of the most cited Chinese fitness-brand campaigns and a reference for insight-driven sports advertising.

Why it lands

  • Saying fear is normal — even right — reversed the shame that makes people quit, so the message felt like permission rather than pressure.
  • Five real member stories (a blind runner, a plus-size yogi) made the fear concrete and credible; no actors pretending.
  • The 'I'm afraid… but I'm more afraid of…' structure hands every viewer a ready-made sentence to repeat and share.
  • One TVC plus five personal films and metro posters let the idea scale across channels without diluting the core.

What it did

The film drew 1M+ full views, 28.6M Weibo topic reads, and 30k+ user-generated posts inside Keep; it won Gold at the 2019 金投赏 (ROI Festival) and Gold in the 2020 数英奖 film category.

What you can take

The most motivating brand message is permission to be afraid. Real members, not actors, made the fear credible — and the 'more afraid of not trying' turn gives viewers a line they want to repeat.

Since then

The campaign followed KARMA's 2016 '自律给我自由' work for Keep and cemented a brand voice built on user psychology rather than aspirational perfection. It is regularly used in Chinese advertising textbooks and retrospectives as an example of turning a negative emotion into a motivational claim, and Keep continued the dialectical tone in later campaigns.
