McDonald's Philippines turns idle party rooms into free all-night study halls
Leo Manila turns 107 idle McDonald's party rooms into free Night Classrooms with WiFi and laptops — 73,000+ sign-ups and four ADFEST 2025 awards.

What it had to solve
In the Philippines, most middle- and lower-income homes are cramped, noisy and offline; the team's cited UNESCO survey says 79.7% of households have no computer and 84.3% no internet. Campuses and libraries close at night, so students study in expensive cafés — while McDonald's 24-hour stores near 250+ colleges sit quiet, well-lit and unused after dinner.
How it works
At night, campuses and libraries in the Philippines shut down, and most students from middle- and lower-income homes are left with cramped rooms, weak internet and noise. The team's cited UNESCO household data says 79.7% of homes have no computer and 84.3% have no internet, so students often pay for café seats just to finish homework.
McDonald's 24-hour stores sit right next to 250+ colleges and universities, and after dinner they go quiet: spacious, air-conditioned, well-lit rooms with nothing in them until morning. Leo Manila's idea was simply to lend those idle party rooms back to the neighbourhood — as free Night Classrooms open 7pm to 6am, bookable by QR code, equipped with WiFi, laptops, charging stations and study dividers, plus neon signs that switched on when study hours began.
The program ran across 107 stores, logged over 73,000 sign-ups and 140,000+ open hours with an average of 700 students per store, generated 100% positive sentiment and ₱1.9M of earned media, and lifted the 'Brand I Trust' score by 9.3 points among teens and young adults. It won four awards at ADFEST 2025, including Silvers in Creative Strategy and Sustainable, and was shortlisted at Cannes Lions 2025.
Why it lands
- The idea starts from a real national data point — students have nowhere quiet to study — rather than from a message the brand wanted to say.
- It turns an idle, already-paid-for asset (empty party rooms at night) into a service, so the activation costs little to run at scale.
- The 24-hour stores are already located where the problem is: within walking distance of the universities whose students need them.
- Every element — QR booking, WiFi, laptops, meal deals — is built from what the restaurants already had, making it easy to replicate across the chain.
- The result is brand trust earned through use, measured in sign-ups, sentiment and a 9.3-point trust gain rather than ad recall.
What it did
Over 73,000 student sign-ups, 140,000+ hours of open study space and an average of 700 students per store; 100% positive sentiment, ₱1.9M in earned media, and a 9.3-point rise in the 'Brand I Trust' score among teens and young adults. Night Classroom won four awards at ADFEST 2025, including Creative Strategy and Sustainable Silvers.
What you can take
Before inventing a message, inventory what the business already owns that others need: McDonald's asset was quiet, lit, Wi-Fi-ready real estate open at exactly the hours students lacked space.
Since then
Night Classroom first launched in 2023 and returned as Wave 3 in 2024 with 107 branches open 8pm–4am, with adobo and national media covering the relaunch. It built on McDonald's Classroom, the pandemic-era predecessor that won an APAC Effie in 2022. At ADFEST 2025 the campaign took four awards — including Creative Strategy and Sustainable Silvers — and earned a Cannes Lions 2025 Brand Experience shortlist, establishing the stores-as-community-infrastructure model as a repeatable brand program.
