Mānuka Health makes bee-vision UV photos of flowers its entire brand language
Honeybees see in UV, so Mānuka Health photographed flowers and the manuka tree through a bee's eyes and turned those images into its brand.
Mānuka Health
What it had to solve
Mānuka Health's honey comes from the manuka tree, but its imagery showed the plant the way people see it. The creative departure began with a biological fact: honeybees see in UV, a spectrum invisible to the human eye.
How it works
Mānuka Health sells products built around the manuka tree, yet its imagery could only show the plant the way people see it. The project's starting point was a biological revelation: honeybees see in ultraviolet, a spectrum invisible to the human eye.
Working with photographers, the team documented the world of flowers and the manuka tree as seen through the eyes of the honeybee, in UV. The images are not an art effect; they are the brand's actual viewpoint, rooted in how bees experience the plant.
Those images became the visual language for the whole brand: packaging, online storytelling, the website, social, film and promotional posters, plus a photographic book and an exhibition. D&AD keeps the work in its awards archive under Photography; the page records no sales figures.
Why it lands
- Rooting the imagery in the bee's UV vision makes the brand's story literal: the pictures show what the pollinator actually sees when it reaches the manuka flower.
- Because the source insight is biological, the look is distinctive and defensible, not a style another honey brand can copy from a stock library.
- Applying one visual language across packaging, web, social, film, posters, a book and an exhibition keeps every touchpoint telling the same story.
- Launching a book and an exhibition turns brand photography into culture, giving people a reason to engage beyond the pack on a shelf.
What it did
The UV photography became the brand's visual language on every touchpoint, from pack to poster, with a book and an exhibition completing the launch. D&AD keeps the work in its awards archive under Photography; the page records no sales figures.
What you can take
When a product's origin story is invisible to the buyer, adopt the point of view of the one creature that can see it: the bee's UV world gives a honey brand imagery no stock library can supply.
Since then
The Mānuka Health identity was built on UV photography taken from the honeybee's point of view, extending from packaging to a photographic book and an exhibition. D&AD keeps the work in its awards archive under Photography and names Mānuka Health New Zealand as client; the page records no agency and no sales or attendance figures.
