Jeshi’s 3210: making the neighbourhood part of the animation

Directors’ Library dates its entry to March 2022 and credits director Will Dohrn, production company Ground Work and label Because Music.^[2] D&AD lists the work in its 2023 Music Videos archive.^[1] The publication month and awards year are different reference points, not competing release dates.

D&AD describes a walk through Jeshi’s neighbourhood, with photographs arranged to create short flipbook-like sequences.^[1] That description does not establish an uninterrupted take, an absence of editing or a production without digital effects. A physical technique can coexist with editing and effects; the production process needs its own evidence.

Our interpretation is that the setting does more than provide a backdrop: it helps connect the animation’s mechanism to the performer’s world. This is an analysis of the documented concept, not a claim that we have inspected every frame or the production files. The reviewed pages do not establish views, sales uplift, production cost or comparative audience retention.

For a new project, ask what would be lost if the same sequence were made against a neutral background. If the answer is nothing, the location may be decoration. If a route, object or recognisable detail contributes to the story, test whether that meaning remains visible at the intended viewing size. Physical complexity alone is not evidence of a clearer or more effective film.

1. Write the one idea that the location should communicate, and define what a viewer should notice.
2. Storyboard a short sequence showing photographs, camera positions and transitions; mark any planned editing explicitly.
3. Test a small section at the intended screen size and playback speed before scaling up.
4. Check image rights, location permission, legibility and viewer comfort; revise rapid transitions when needed.
5. Compare comprehension and completion against a simpler version using the same audience and conditions. Record the sample and limitations. These are our proposed tests, not documented steps or results from the 3210 shoot.
