Astra Honda's Rest Area makes 200+ dealerships stamp stops on mudik routes

AHM turned 200+ dealerships along mudik routes into Google-Mapped 'Honda Rest Area' stops, rewarding each safety break with a stamp toward prizes.

PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM)

The ideaActivate 200+ existing Honda dealerships as rest areas along mudik routes, mark every stop on Google Maps, and turn each safety break into a stamp toward prizes.substantial

What it had to solve

Astra Honda Motor had run homecoming checkpoints for years, but they were centralized hubs that rented vacant lots or partnered with sites along the Pantura route. Data showed motorcyclists need a break of at least 15 minutes every two hours, and typical homecoming trips run 7–12 hours — so rest stops had to be spread across the whole route, not clustered at a few points.

How it works

Every year around Lebaran, tens of millions of Indonesians ride home along the Pantura corridor, and fatigue is a leading cause of motorcycle accidents on those long trips. Astra Honda Motor (AHM) had run homecoming checkpoints for years, but they were centralized hubs that rented vacant lots or partnered with sites along the way.

The insight behind Honda Rest Area: this was not a communication problem but a distribution problem. Data showed motorcyclists need at least a 15-minute break every two hours and typical homecoming trips last 7–12 hours, so the stops had to be spread along the whole route. TU7UH's answer used the 200+ Honda dealerships already scattered along the corridors — no new infrastructure, just a new job for the existing network.

For the homecoming period, every participating dealer was labelled 'Honda Rest Area' on Google Maps, turning a dealer into something a tired rider could find and trust. Each stop offered light motorcycle service, free drinks and snacks, AC relaxation areas and prayer space, and a simple stamp card turned each safety break into a step toward Honda prizes — more stamps meant a better chance to win.

The team deliberately resisted suggestions to make the concept more high-tech, keeping it a down-to-earth rest stop that resonated with the majority of Indonesian travelers. The network ran 176 rest points from 28 March to 6 April 2025, and the campaign won a Citra Pariwara 38 gold and two silvers, made the Cannes Lions 2025 Brand Experience shortlist, and took silver and bronze at Spikes Asia 2026.

Why it lands

  • It redefined the problem as distribution, not communication: the dealerships were already located exactly where tired riders pass every two hours.
  • Google Maps labelling made the network findable at the moment of need, borrowing the authority of a navigation app riders already trust.
  • The stamp card converted a safety instruction into something riders actively wanted to do, since every stop improved their chance of winning prizes.
  • It extended a decade-old brand commitment — AHM's OneHEART homecoming services — rather than inventing a one-off campaign, which is why it read as authentic.
  • Keeping the idea low-tech was a deliberate choice that fit the audience's real journey, not a lack of ambition.

What it did

AHM and its main dealers ran 176 rest points nationwide — 12 flagship mudik posts in Java, 14 Siaga+ stations along the Lampung–Java–Bali corridors and 150 Siaga stations across Indonesia. Honda Rest Area won a gold in Social Purpose and silvers in Digital Integrated Campaign and Innovative Use of Out-of-Home at Citra Pariwara 38, was the only Indonesian shortlist in Brand Experience at Cannes Lions 2025, and won silver and bronze at Spikes Asia 2026.

What you can take

Mine the network you already own: 200+ dealerships were rest points waiting to be labelled, and the deliberately low-tech version that meets riders where they are beat any 'high-tech' alternative.

Since then

After the 2025 homecoming season, Honda Rest Area collected recognition across three shows: Citra Pariwara 38 (gold in Social Purpose, silvers in Digital Integrated Campaign and Innovative Use of Out-of-Home), a Cannes Lions 2025 Brand Experience shortlist, and silver and bronze at Spikes Asia 2026, where TU7UH was named Indonesia Agency of the Year. AHM and TU7UH followed it with The Kilometer Loyalty Exchange, which repackaged Mudik Bareng Honda's group homecoming as an airline-mileage-style reward for letting Honda ship your bike home.
