What it had to solve
Grand Seiko's new Caliber 9RB2 reaches ±20 seconds per year — the most accurate wristwatch movement powered by a mainspring — but that precision is invisible. The design goal was to convey it through the watch's exterior, not just its spec sheet, while also shrinking the case to 37mm for smaller wrists.
How it works
Grand Seiko's Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2 reaches an annual accuracy of ±20 seconds — the most accurate wristwatch movement powered by a mainspring — but accuracy is invisible. Designer Akira Yoshida's stated aim was to convey the value of that extraordinary precision through the watch's exterior, not only its movement, and the natural path was to make the watch smaller and more refined.
Miniaturizing the movement to 30mm in diameter and 5.02mm thick allowed a 37mm case, the smallest ever for a 9R-series Grand Seiko, worn comfortably by people with smaller wrists. The High-Intensity Titanium case alternates Grand Seiko's signature Zaratsu mirror polish with a brushed finish, creating a harmony of light and shadow.
The dial tells the story of the movement's home: it reproduces the frost-covered forests of the Kirigamine Highlands east of the Shinshu Watch Studio in layered, silver-tinged blue, accented by a tempered blue seconds hand whose glide embodies Spring Drive's smooth sweep.
Revealed at Watches & Wonders Geneva 2025 and nominated for the GPHG Men's Watch prize, the SLGB003 won Red Dot Best of the Best 2026. The jury praised the balance of polished and brushed surfaces, the poetic layered dial, and the precision of the compact Caliber 9RB2.

The SLGB003 went on sale in June 2025, with the platinum SLGB001 limited to 80 boutique-only pieces. In late 2025 it was nominated for the Men's Watch category at the GPHG, and in June 2026 Grand Seiko announced it had won Red Dot Best of the Best, the highest distinction in Product Design. Grand Seiko framed the win as recognition that U.F.A. precision could be expressed through Japanese aesthetics, and the frost-forest dial became the signature motif of the Spring Drive U.F.A. line.
