GEICO 'Unskippable' finishes its pitch in 5 seconds — and wins a Cannes Film Grand Prix

The Martin Agency turned YouTube's most hated format into comedy: GEICO's pitch lands in five seconds, then actors freeze while chaos continues around them.

The ideaAccept that viewers skip after five seconds and put the entire pitch inside that window — then keep filming the 'frozen' scene as the world behind them keeps moving.substantial

What it had to solve

YouTube pre-roll was advertising's graveyard: research showed a 96 percent skip rate after five seconds, and most spots were just TV ads dropped into the slot. GEICO and The Martin Agency set out to make the format itself the joke instead of fighting it.

How it works

In early 2015 GEICO and The Martin Agency launched 'Unskippable', a set of YouTube pre-roll ads built on a brutal piece of research: 96 percent of viewers skip pre-rolls after five seconds. Most advertisers treated that as a hurdle; Martin treated it as the brief, deciding the entire commercial had to work inside the window before the skip button appeared.

Each spot opens like a cheesy testimonial, then a voiceover delivers the punchline: 'You can't skip this ad, because it's already over.' The pitch is done within seconds, and then the camera keeps rolling as the actors freeze mid-dinner while the world around them keeps moving — a Saint Bernard named Bolt climbs onto the table and eats the family's spaghetti, a vacuum cleaner careers around an office. Director duo Terri Timely shot four spots as single takes in two days, art-directing each frozen scene 'stock-photo chic'.

The campaign became the year's most-praised idea: Adweek named it the best ad campaign of 2015, D&AD recorded over 10 million views in the first month, and it won one of the two Cannes Lions 2015 Film Grands Prix plus two gold Clios. GEICO said mobile sales volumes hit records during the run, with the spots credited as 'a big piece of that'.

Why it lands

  • The insight was structural: the five-second countdown is the real product, so the ad was designed to live inside it instead of ignoring it.
  • Freezing the characters created a second joke that rewarded people for not skipping, turning an interruption into entertainment.
  • The idea was about the format itself, so it read as clever meta-comedy rather than another insurance pitch.
  • Single-take execution kept it cheap and repeatable: four spots, same construct, all unmistakably GEICO.

What it did

The dog spot alone drew over 8 million views — 10 million in the first month across the campaign, per D&AD — with full plays 'way higher' than the norm. Adweek named Unskippable the best ad campaign of 2015, and it took one of the two Cannes Lions Film Grands Prix plus two gold Clios.

What you can take

Don't fight the medium's rules — build inside them: treating the hated five-second skip window as the canvas turned an interruptive format into comedy people watched on purpose.

Since then

Unskippable became GEICO's signature work of the decade and a reference point for format-native advertising. The agency kept the construct running with new spots, and later retrospectives by Adweek and others ranked it among the best campaigns of the 2010s. The 'frozen moment' gag was widely imitated across the industry, cementing pre-roll as a place where creativity could win rather than a dead zone.
