Coinbase's 'Your Way Out' films a PS1-style game in real life — Cannes Film Craft GP

For the 2026 Oscars, Coinbase made a low-poly game world with real actors and in-camera effects; an NPC breaks out into real life.

What it had to solve

Coinbase wanted its Oscars spot to make people feel trapped in the old financial system and root for an escape — while still letting the audience feel the protagonist's humanity even inside a game world.

How it works

During the 98th Academy Awards in March 2026, Coinbase aired 'Your Way Out', a film that drops viewers into a low-resolution, PS1-era video game world. A background character — an NPC on a looping commute — slowly realizes he is trapped in a simulation and breaks out into a real, high-definition world.

The twist was that almost none of it was computer graphics. Director Oscar Hudson and agency Isle of Any shot it practically: actors wore lycra masks printed with their own faces and clothes printed as flat 2D textures, sets were pixelated and framed at an isometric angle, lighting was engineered to be shadowless, and cast and extras rehearsed the stiff, looping walk of game characters.

The idea was that the transition out of the game should be felt rather than seen: as the protagonist gains control, the world slowly gains real-life detail — shadows, texture, human movement. Coinbase framed it as 'Game not over. It's time to take back control', extending the metaphor of escaping a scripted financial system to the audience.

The film won the Film Craft Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2026. The jury cited the depth and originality of the craft, and the making-of clips — printed costumes, physical sets, shadowless lighting — became part of the campaign's story.

Why it lands

  • The video-game metaphor made an abstract critique of finance concrete: a system where everyone moves on rails, and one character steps off them.
  • Shooting in camera, not CGI, made the 'simulation' world feel physical, and made the craft itself the spectacle.
  • The gradual shift from game to reality let the story carry the message without a voiceover lecturing the viewer.
  • Airing during the Oscars put the idea in front of a mass audience at a cultural peak, and the making-of content extended the campaign's life.

What you can take

Craft can be the message: choosing practical, in-camera effects over CGI made the 'simulation' feel tangible and turned the film itself into proof of the brand's promise of human control.

Since then

The spot became one of the most discussed ads of the 2026 Oscars, and behind-the-scenes videos showing the printed costumes, face masks and shadowless sets spread across creative media. It capped the campaign at Cannes Lions 2026 with the Film Craft Grand Prix, becoming a reference case for practical effects in a digital era.
