Dyson's Airstrait straightens wet hair with air, not hot plates — launched 2023

What it had to solve

Traditional straighteners clamp hair between hot plates, which damages it; blow-drying first and then straightening adds a rough extra step. Dyson set out to do the whole routine in one machine that never touches the hair with a plate.

How it works

In May 2023 Dyson launched the Airstrait, a straightener that dries and straightens hair from wet using high-velocity air instead of hot plates. The company framed it as its first wet-to-dry straightener, and 'no hot plates, no heat damage' became the product's entire pitch.

The engineering draws on Dyson's airflow work of the previous 25 years. Two 1.5mm apertures along the arms accelerate air into downward blades angled at 45°, which converge into one focused jet that stretches hair as it dries. A Hyperdymium motor spins a 13-blade impeller at up to 106,000rpm, propelling over 11.9 litres of air per second, while intelligent heat control samples airflow temperature 30 times a second.

The design decision was to start from wet hair. Dyson Hair Care VP Emma Sheldon explained that wet hair's hydrogen bonds are naturally weakened and pliable, so drying and straightening simultaneously cuts two steps into one and removes the rough pre-drying stage that stresses hair.

The result was a new entry point rather than an incremental refresh: the first straightener in the line with no plates at all, launched in the US in May 2023 and rolled out through markets including South Korea and Australia, positioning Dyson's airflow expertise as the answer to heat damage.

Why it lands

  • Removing the hot plate attacked the real customer pain — heat damage — instead of adding another heat setting.
  • Starting from wet hair exploited hair science: weakened hydrogen bonds make wet hair pliable, so one air pass can both dry and reset its shape.
