Deportivo Municipal crams 1,000 micro-sponsors onto one jersey — Cannes Sport Grand Prix

A broke Peruvian football club splits its jersey into 1,000 tiny sponsor slots sold to fans and shops — all sold in 3 months, raising 254,000 soles.

The ideaSplit the club's shirt into ~1,000 black-and-white squares, each sold from 200 soles — turning the jersey into a crowdfunding platform for fans and local businesses.substantial

What it had to solve

Deportivo Municipal, founded in Lima in 1935 and four times Peruvian champion, lost TV rights, commercial contracts and its main sponsor as relegations and debt mounted, until it fell to amateur Copa Perú and faced possible disappearance.

How it works

Deportivo Municipal, the Lima club founded by municipal employees in 1935 and nicknamed 'La Academia', won four Peruvian championships but then slid through relegations, administrative problems and mounting debts. It lost its television rights, commercial contracts and main sponsor, ending up in amateur Copa Perú with the club at risk of disappearing.

Instead of hunting for one large sponsor, the club and McCann Lima launched 'The Thousand Sponsors of Muni' on 15 January 2026. The white shirt with its red diagonal sash was redesigned as a pixelated grid of ~1,000 black-and-white squares, and every square became a sponsorship slot sold from 200 soles (~€50).

Buyers — small shopkeepers, artisans, restaurateurs and ordinary supporters — became official club sponsors, entitled to sell club merchandise in their businesses and use player images to promote themselves. Within three months all 1,000 spaces were sold, raising 254,000 soles (~€65,000) and reaching more than 10.5 million people on social media.

The shirt became a global symbol of collective rescue, covered by media far beyond Peru. In June 2026 the campaign won the Entertainment for Sport Grand Prix at Cannes Lions (657 entries), and it is now cited as a template for participatory sports sponsorship.

Why it lands

  • It democratized sponsorship: a slot cost 200 soles, so fans and micro-businesses could fund their own club.
  • The product was the medium — the jersey became a visible, shareable crowdfunding ledger.
  • It converted an existential financial crisis into community ownership and pride.
  • Sponsor benefits (merch rights, player images) gave buyers real business value, not charity.
  • The result was measurable: sold out in 3 months, 254,000 soles raised, 10.5M people reached.

What it did

All 1,000 spaces sold within three months, raising 254,000 soles (~€65,000); social reach of 10.5M+; the shirt went viral worldwide and won the Cannes Lions 2026 Entertainment for Sport Grand Prix out of 657 entries.

What you can take

If one big sponsor is impossible, sell the asset as a thousand small ones: democratizing sponsorship turns fans into funders and a crisis into collective ownership.

Since then

After the campaign sold out, the club's shirt became a symbol of collective rescue and the idea spread: Ecuador's El Nacional announced it would imitate the model by selling shirt spaces to fans and brands. McCann Lima's work was awarded the Entertainment for Sport Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2026, and industry coverage now cites it as a template for how community-supported clubs can fund themselves without a major sponsor.
