Buscopan's Fashion Cramps uses London Fashion Week to make IBS speakable

Buscopan mimics high-fashion shoots, models humorously clutching stomachs, to make IBS speak the fashion world's own language during London Fashion Week.

What it had to solve

Stress and eating disorders, both prevalent in the fashion industry, contribute to irritable bowel syndrome, yet IBS stays an unmentionable subject on the catwalk. Buscopan, the leading antispasmodic, wanted to raise awareness in the UK, its key market, without breaking fashion's aesthetic spell.

How it works

Fashion is one of the few industries where stress and eating disorders are openly discussed as occupational hazards, and both are known contributors to irritable bowel syndrome. Yet IBS itself stays taboo on the catwalk: an unglamorous, invisible condition in a business built on image.

Buscopan, the leading antispasmodic, went the opposite way in the UK, its key market. Instead of clinical advertising, the Fashion Cramps campaign imitated the industry's own imagery: models adopt exaggerated fashion poses while humorously clutching their stomachs, and the copy weaves high-fashion descriptions together with stress triggers.

The ads were timed to London Fashion Week and placed where the audience already is, across OOH circuits, leading fashion magazines and hyper-targeted online ads, so the conversation about IBS happened inside fashion culture rather than outside it.

Why it lands

  • The campaign borrowed fashion's own visual language, so a taboo subject arrived in a form the industry could recognise rather than reject.
  • Timing the ads to London Fashion Week put the message inside the very event whose stress culture aggravates the condition.
  • Models humorously clutching their stomachs let humour carry a subject that clinical healthcare advertising usually renders serious or shameful.
  • Fashion magazines, OOH circuits and hyper-targeted online ads met IBS sufferers in the exact media where the industry's image pressure is strongest.

What it did

The campaign raised awareness of IBS in a culturally nuanced way, giving the condition fashion's own vocabulary on the industry's biggest stage. D&AD preserved the work in its awards archive, which records no audience or sales figures.

What you can take

When a culture hides a condition its lifestyle causes, borrow that culture's own imagery and its biggest moment; the taboo becomes speakable exactly where it is lived.

Since then

The campaign was timed to London Fashion Week and preserved in the D&AD awards archive; the archive records no sales or awareness figures, so the case stands on making a hidden health condition culturally visible.
