A bank turns Ramadan's calendar into Braille moon bracelets for the blind — 'Blind Faith'
Bank Al Etihad and VML Jordan made the Imsakiyeh a wearable 30-day Braille calendar — Jordan's first D&AD Pencil and the Dubai Lynx 2025 Design Grand Prix.
Bank Al Etihad
What it had to solve
Ramadan is set by sighting the moon, and every home follows the printed Imsakiyeh calendar — a 30-day timetable of fasting times that is useless to someone who cannot see. Bank Al Etihad and VML Jordan asked how a bank could make the holy month accessible instead of only advertising around it.
How it works
Ramadan revolves around seeing: the month begins when the moon is sighted, and every household tracks the days and fasting hours on the printed Imsakiyeh calendar. For the visually impaired, that everyday object is unusable — a ritual built on sight leaves them out of the spiritual journey everyone else shares. Bank Al Etihad and VML Jordan set out to fix the object itself.
Their answer, 'Blind Faith', reimagined the Imsakiyeh as 30 wearable bracelets, one for each day of Ramadan. Each bracelet carries an embossed representation of that night's moon phase — the current day marked by an enlarged moon — plus sunrise, sunset and fasting times in Arabic Braille. The design was inspired by wristwatches, made adjustable so it can be put on without help, and repeatedly refined with blind users until it was intuitive enough to wear independently.
For Ramadan 2025, the campaign evolved from a personal tool into a shared ritual: a tactile family booklet with lunar phases, iftar and suhoor times, and Arabic text for sighted family members, distributed through schools and centers for the blind across Jordan in the first week of the month. Recipients described feeling 'truly seen and included' for the first time, and the bank's CMO framed the work as part of a wider accessibility agenda that includes accessible ATMs and branches.
The design consequences were immediate and measurable: the campaign earned Jordan its first D&AD Pencil, then took the Grand Prix for Design plus a Gold Lynx at the 2025 Dubai Lynx awards. People who had lost their sight said the bracelet reconnected them to a tradition they believed was lost; those born blind encountered the moon's shape for the first time. A Ramadan calendar designed for touch, not sight, turned an overlooked community into the campaign's most powerful audience.
Why it lands
- It redesigned a universal ritual object instead of making an ad about Ramadan.
- Touch replaced sight as the interface, so the product itself delivered the inclusion message.
- It was refined with blind users so the bracelet could be worn without assistance.
- The second iteration scaled a personal object into a shared family ritual.
- Recognition travelled across award systems — Jordan's first D&AD Pencil and a Dubai Lynx Grand Prix.
What it did
People who lost sight were reconnected to a tradition they thought was gone; people born blind felt the moon's shape for the first time. The work won Jordan its first D&AD Pencil and the Design Grand Prix plus a Gold Lynx at Dubai Lynx 2025, and pushed the inclusion conversation beyond banking.
What you can take
Look for the ritual everyone assumes works for everyone: redesign the object that silently excludes people, make it tactile, and the fix itself becomes the brand's proof of purpose.
Since then
After the bracelet won Jordan's first D&AD Pencil, Bank Al Etihad and VML Jordan relaunched 'Blind Faith' for Ramadan 2025 with a family booklet in Arabic and Braille, distributed through schools and centers for the blind in the first week of the month. At Dubai Lynx 2025 it took the Grand Prix for Design plus a Gold Lynx. VML Jordan says the goal is to keep embedding accessibility in everyday culture — education, public spaces — rather than one-off solutions, and the bank pairs the campaign with accessible ATMs and branch design as part of the same commitment.
