Band mixes fan cheers into one 'Goal!' for Palmeiras' first Club World Cup score

Palmeiras had never scored at a Club World Cup, so broadcaster Band blended thousands of fan cheers into one seamless 'Goal!' for the live moment.

What it had to solve

Palmeiras, the greatest champion in Brazilian football, was about to play the FIFA Club World Cup for the third time in its history — yet the club had never scored in the tournament, so 12 million fans had never had that historic moment to celebrate. Band Network, FIFA's official broadcaster in Brazil, was certain the first goal would finally come.

How it works

Palmeiras, the most decorated champion in Brazilian football, was going to play the FIFA Club World Cup for the third time in its history. Its 12 million fans faced a difficult fact: the club had never scored in the tournament, so there had never been a Palmeiras goal in that competition to celebrate.

Band Network, FIFA's official broadcaster in Brazil, was so certain the unprecedented first goal would finally happen that it invited fans to send in clips of them cheering. Thousands of audio messages were collected and mixed into one seamless shout of 'Goal!'.

The pre-recorded roar was built to air during the live broadcast, so the historic moment would be greeted by fans' own voices. The work touched the hearts of the whole country and entered the D&AD Awards archive in 2022, credited to FCB Brasil.

Why it lands

  • The club's 12 million fans could not all be at the stadium, so the campaign gave the broadcast a way to carry their voices into it.
  • Because Palmeiras had never scored in the tournament, the cheer was a promise rather than a boast — fans recorded hope before the moment existed.
  • Mixing thousands of real voices made the broadcast feel national instead of produced, since every listener could be inside the sound.
  • Pre-recording the shout let the broadcaster be ready for the emotional peak the instant the goal happened, with no live-mixing risk.

What it did

When the historic goal was broadcast, the goal shout could carry the voices of fans who were not in the stadium, touching the hearts of the whole country during the live transmission. FCB Brasil led the work for Band, and the campaign entered the D&AD Awards archive in 2022.

What you can take

When an audience has waited years for a moment, pre-build its sound: letting fans hear their own voices in the historic cheer turns a broadcast into a celebration the whole country owns.

Since then

The Unshouted Goal entered the D&AD Awards archive in 2022 as an example of giving an audience the sound of a moment they had never been able to make. The transferable idea — collect the voices of people who cannot be at the event and embed them in its broadcast — suits any live occasion that an audience has waited years to hear.
