What it had to solve

Interactive robots usually feel like appliances: users must speak wake words or commands, dialogue is stilted, and content stays locked on small built-in screens. Baidu's AI interaction design team wanted a robot whose presence — look, movement, conversation — made people interact the way they do with another being, not with a device.

How it works

NIRO Pro is Baidu's attempt to make an interactive robot feel like a character instead of an appliance. The robot combines natural image and speech understanding, so it can hold a fluent conversation with a person without that person issuing voice commands, and it can imitate human motion sequences, adapting the gestures to whatever the situation calls for.

The distinctive move is the built-in micro laser projector: digital content such as apps or games can be projected in HD quality onto any surface, turning the room itself into the robot's display. The look, inspired by animation design, gives the machine a charming, non-mechanical presence that matches its conversational behaviour.

Red Dot's jury said NIRO Pro breathes new life into the world of human-robot interaction, and the robot received the Red Dot Award 2019 as well as the A'Design Award 2019. The case shows a consumer-robot maker competing on interaction character rather than on specifications.
