Atratus's Living Fabric: fique cloth seeded with oil-eating bacteria cleans spills
VML and Atratus wove fique fibre with oil-eating bacteria into a biodegradable textile that cleans spills and restores soil in under 30 days.

What it had to solve
UNEP figures cited by the team count more than 1,000 significant land-based oil spills a year in Colombia — legacy of decades of conflict — contaminating millions of hectares and threatening over 1,300 species. Existing remediation was costly, slow and often harmful, so Atratus, Universidad de los Andes and VML Bogotá looked for a natural answer.
How it works
Colombia's decades of armed conflict left a quieter scar: according to UNEP figures cited by the team, more than 1,000 significant land-based oil spills occur every year, contaminating millions of hectares, destroying habitats and threatening over 1,300 species. Conventional cleanup was expensive, slow and sometimes harmful to the very land it was meant to save.
The answer came from microbiology. Lysinibacillus sphaericus is a naturally occurring bacterium that biodegrades hydrocarbon molecules, turning oil into simpler compounds and releasing nitrates that restore fertility. After two years of testing, Atratus — working with the University of the Andes and VML Bogotá — embedded those bacteria in biodegradable fibres from fique, a native Colombian plant, producing Living Fabric: a rough, burlap-like textile that can be rolled out over contaminated ground.
Lightweight and portable, a box holds 33 square metres of the material, so crews can reach remote ecosystems without heavy machinery or supply chains. Where the fabric meets oil, the bacteria feed and the soil recovers in under 30 days. Rather than patenting the process, the team released it open source, so any organization anywhere can grow the fibres, inoculate them and deploy them locally.
Why it lands
- Bioremediation already existed; the creative leap was making a fragile organism usable in the field — woven into a tough carrier anyone can roll out by hand.
- Fique is a native Colombian crop, so the carrier is local, renewable and fully biodegradable — no second cleanup after the first one.
- A 30-day restoration cycle turns a chronic disaster into a scheduled repair, which is what makes the material practical for response teams.
- Open-sourcing the recipe removed the bottleneck that usually keeps such inventions from remote regions: cost and licensing.

When Living Fabric meets oil, the bacteria feed on the contamination and restore the soil in less than 30 days. The team published the recipe open source so communities, researchers and response teams can produce and deploy it locally, and the idea won Cannes Lions Innovation Bronze 2025 plus Clio, One Show and D&AD recognition.
What you can take
Find the pollutant's natural predator and make it portable: embed the organism that already eats the problem in a biodegradable carrier, then publish the recipe so scale is not owned by one supplier.
Since then
Living Fabric won a Clio in late 2024, Cannes Lions Innovation Bronze in 2025 in the Environmental Innovation subcategory, and One Show and D&AD recognition in 2026. Its open-source model means adoption is measured less by sales than by who picks it up: the team's stated ambition is for communities, researchers, governments and response teams worldwide to produce and deploy the material locally, without centralized supply chains. The early-stage product has not published large-scale field restoration figures; its claim so far is a proven mechanism, a portable form and an open recipe.
