PedidosYa's fake 'order on the way' alert live-tracked the World Cup trophy home

After Argentina's World Cup win, PedidosYa sent half the country a fake delivery notification that opened into a live map of the champions' flight home.

What it had to solve

A country was in the middle of celebrating its World Cup victory, and PedidosYa sat in half of its phones. The champions and the trophy were flying home — a journey the whole country wanted to follow, and the app already had a map built for following deliveries.

How it works

In late 2022, in the middle of celebrations over a World Cup victory, delivery app PedidosYa sent half the country a fake delivery notification reading 'Your order is on the way'. Millions of users panicked, sure their accounts had been hacked or they had been scammed.

Opening it flipped the emotion: instead of a hack, they found the map the app uses to track orders — this time linked to real-time data tracking the flight that brought the champions and the World Cup Trophy back to the country. The delivery had been national all along.

The stunt treated the app's own language as content: a familiar notification and a familiar map became the stage for a live event the whole country shared. D&AD kept the work in its awards archive, which records no viewing figures.

Why it lands

  • The notification was believable because it used real product language — the panic phase was part of the design, not a failure.
  • The reveal reused the tracking map, so the story unfolded inside the brand's own utility rather than in an ad break.
  • It turned a shared celebration into something users opened and followed in real time instead of only watching on TV.
  • It rode a moment already shared by millions, so the payoff was instant and the stunt became the story people retold.

What it did

Anguish turned into joy in a single tap: a routine app screen became the country's shared live view of the trophy's homecoming. The work is preserved in the D&AD awards archive.

What you can take

Use the screen your users already trust as the stage: the fake delivery alert worked because 'Your order is on the way' was familiar, so the live trophy map landed inside a ritual instead of an ad.

Since then

The campaign is preserved in the D&AD awards archive, which records no viewing figures. Its lasting contribution is the format: a delivery app took its two most familiar screens — the push notification and the tracking map — and made them the medium for a live national event, a platform-native move other apps could borrow for their own moments.
