Woola turns waste wool into shipping envelopes — Pentawards 2024 Platinum

Coarse wool farmers used to burn or bury becomes e-commerce packaging that replaces plastic bubble mailers — and wins Pentawards' Sustainable Design Platinum.

What it had to solve

European sheep farming produces huge amounts of wool too coarse for textiles; in Estonia it was often burned or buried. E-commerce still shipped fragile goods in plastic bubble mailers.

How it works

Every year Europe's sheep farmers produce wool too coarse for the textile trade. In Estonia much of it ended up burned or buried — a cost, not a product. Woola, founded in 2020 by Anna-Liisa Palatu and co-founders, looked at that waste stream and saw the padding inside a shipping envelope.

The result is the Wool Gusset Envelope: a paper exterior with an inner cushion made of 100% waste wool sourced directly from Estonian farmers. Wool's resilience, elasticity and water resistance make it a genuine replacement for plastic bubble mailers, and at the end of its life both materials are renewable and biodegradable.

The design won the Sustainable Design Platinum at the Pentawards 2024 ceremony in London on 25 October 2024, the category's highest award. French perfume brand Maison Matine adopted the envelopes, and Woola framed the win as credibility for its mission to halve demand for plastic bubble wrap by 2030.

Why it lands

  • It turns a negative-value waste stream into the core material of a product, so cost and sustainability point the same way.
  • Wool genuinely outperforms plastic on protection metrics — water resistance, temperature regulation, durability — rather than being a feel-good substitute.
  • The design keeps the material honest: the wool is visible and the product's whole story is told by its packaging.
  • Sourcing directly from Estonian farmers gives the supply chain a circular, local shape competitors cannot easily copy.

What it did

Won the 2024 Pentawards Platinum in Sustainable Design plus a Formes de Luxe e-commerce packaging award; fragrance brand Maison Matine adopted the envelopes, and Woola set a goal of halving plastic bubble-wrap demand by 2030.

What you can take

A waste stream nobody wants — coarse wool with no textile value — can become a premium material once you reframe the problem as packaging protection rather than wool sales.

Since then

Woola expanded beyond envelopes into wool bottle sleeves, box inserts and a box range for the luxury sector, working with Maison Matine and later Louis Vuitton. The company positions the 2024 awards as the credibility that opened those doors, and continues to target replacing plastic bubble wrap in e-commerce shipping.
