Volkswagen turns its TV ad break into a live mobile Golf GTI race

VW buys the first ad of prime-time breaks, then viewers scan a QR code and race the new Golf on phones for the whole break — the only ad they watch.

What it had to solve

Car brands are the second-biggest TV advertisers, so the launch of the new Golf GTI risked getting lost among lookalike spots. The July 2021 launch also landed in Sydney and Melbourne lockdowns, when test drives were impossible.

How it works

Car brands are the second-biggest TV advertisers, so when Volkswagen Australia had to launch the new Golf GTI in July 2021, its spot faced a wall of lookalike rivals. The launch also landed in Sydney and Melbourne lockdowns, when test drives were impossible.

DDB Sydney's answer was to stop buying one ad and start owning the whole break. PHD bought the first 30-second spot in prime-time breaks on Network 10's The Project, Fox Sports and Kayo. On 19 July, the spot flashed a QR code; viewers scanned it and launched a web-based racing game built with studio Art of Play — no app download — and raced the GTI live against everyone else watching, for the exact length of the break.

Races were staged weekly through August, with practice tracks accessible via QR codes on bus shelters and train platforms and at vwgolfadbreak.com.au. Qualifying times could win the actual car. The mechanic turned a passive 30-second slot into a three-minute brand experience, and the game itself became the campaign's content.

More than 70,000 game sessions were recorded, viewer contact requests rose 436% and Golf sales rose 55%. The campaign won the Spikes Asia 2022 Direct Grand Prix and a Cannes Lions 2022 Media Gold for PHD.

Why it lands

  • It reframed the ad break from a passive interruption into a live event people tuned in for — the exact opposite of the usual fight for attention.
  • The QR-first mechanic used the second screen, which media plans usually treat as a threat, as the reason to engage.
  • A web game meant zero friction: no app-store visit, so participation could happen inside the break itself.
  • Prizing the real Golf GTI gave casual players a stake and made the race worth talking about.

What it did

The 30-second spot became a three-minute brand experience: more than 70,000 game sessions were recorded, viewer contact requests rose 436%, and Golf sales rose 55%. The work won the Spikes Asia 2022 Direct Grand Prix and a Cannes Lions 2022 Media Gold for PHD.

What you can take

Don't fight the second screen — make it the product. Owning the whole break as a playable event turned the ad into something viewers tuned in for, and competitors' spots into the thing they skipped.

Since then

Volkswagen and DDB ran several Championship rounds weekly through August 2021. The campaign entered Contagious' case archive and the D&AD Annual 2022 as a model of 'eventised' ad breaks, and PHD's media team won a Cannes Lions 2022 Media Gold for it. DDB framed the mechanic as repeatable — each new launch could turn its own ad break into a playable event.
