Verizon relives 9/12 as a one-day MMS story of reconnecting New York
On 9/11's 20th anniversary Verizon launched a one-day real-time MMS platform telling how employees at its damaged headquarters reconnected Lower Manhattan.
Verizon
What it had to solve
For the 20th anniversary of 9/11, commemoration would naturally look back at the attack. Verizon wanted to honour a different moment: the day after, when its employees — many at the damaged Verizon headquarters — worked to reconnect Lower Manhattan and Wall Street, which was crucial to getting the city back on its feet.
How it works
The twentieth anniversary of 9/11 was inevitably a moment to look back at the attack. Verizon chose instead to tell the story of the next day, when the city had to be reconnected — a chapter its own employees lived from inside the disaster.
9/12: The Untold Story of Reconnecting New York launched for one day only as a real-time, immersive MMS multimedia platform. It told the stories of Verizon employees who were at the damaged Verizon headquarters the day after the attacks, working to reconnect Lower Manhattan and Wall Street, communications that were crucial to getting the city back on its feet.
Telling the restoration through the people who performed it made the anniversary about work rather than rubble. Verizon Creative Marketing led the project, and the experience entered the D&AD Awards archive as a commemoration built around recovery.
Why it lands
- The day after the attack was untold, so the commemoration added a missing chapter instead of repeating the one everyone knew.
- First-person stories from employees on the ground made a network restoration feel like an act of heroism rather than infrastructure.
- A one-day-only launch mirrored the compressed drama of 9/12 and gave the experience urgency.
- Delivering it as an MMS platform tied the medium to the story: the mobile network being rebuilt was the one carrying the message.
What it did
For the anniversary the experience shifted attention from the fall of the towers to the restoration that followed, giving the public a way to live through the day the city was reconnected. The work entered the D&AD Awards archive.
What you can take
Find the untold day next to the famous one: an anniversary commemoration that shows how a city recovered can be more useful than one that shows how it fell.
Since then
Verizon aimed its twentieth-anniversary commemoration at the untold chapter, and 9/12 entered the D&AD Awards archive as an example of anniversary storytelling built around recovery. Because the platform ran for one day only, the campaign's lasting output is the story itself: a record of the employees who got Lower Manhattan and Wall Street back online, told in the medium they restored.
