Semir hires comedian Xu Zhisheng to 'endorse the down, not the coat' — 1.6B exposures

A 30-year-old fashion brand casts a self-deprecating comedian as its down filling beside pretty models — the contrast makes an invisible quality famous.

Semir (森马)

The ideaCast the comedian instead of another model — he endorses the down filling, not the coat — and let his contrast with the handsome spokesmodels do the talking.substantial

What it had to solve

Semir, the Wenzhou casualwear brand with about 4,000 stores, had faded from mainstream attention and had no budget for top celebrities. For winter it needed its down-jacket launch to make people care about a quality rivals ignored: a 1000+ cleanliness rating on the filling.

How it works

Semir (森马), a nearly 30-year-old national casualwear brand, had drifted out of the mainstream conversation even though it still ran about 4,000 stores. For the winter of 2024 its down jackets needed a story, and the honest advantage was one nobody could see: many styles carried a 1000+ cleanliness rating on the filling, roughly twice the new national standard.

The agency Qunyu Mountain (群玉山) decided the spokesperson did not have to wear the product — he could be the product. Comedian Xu Zhisheng (徐志胜), famous for joking about his own face, appeared as 'fluff Zhisheng', a down feather that is picked, washed, beaten and aired before it can enter a coat. The music film "Fluff's Song" (绒毛的歌) mixed animation and live action, directed by Zhang Dapeng (张大鹏) of 'What Is Peppa?' fame.

The campaign's engine was contrast: the brand's handsome spokesmodels Zhang Xincheng and Chen Duling wore the coats in the same posters where Xu wore the down. Viewers turned the gag into copy of their own — 'the others endorse the coat, he endorses the raw material' — and the ads ran across thousands of stores, metro platforms and malls so the joke could be photographed in the wild.

UGC did the rest: Semir's WeChat index hit a one-year high, more than 1,100 Xiaohongshu posts appeared within days, and the topic kept returning to Weibo and Douyin hot-search lists. Agency-reported exposure reached 1.6B with 320M+ of user-generated reach, and JD full-store sales rose 82.3% in the season.

Why it lands

  • The invisible quality — clean down — got a visible body, so the ad and the product claim were the same thing.
  • Putting the comedian beside two conventional models created instant contrast that needed no explanation.
  • The store and metro materials turned every poster into a photo opportunity, feeding the online jokes.
  • A self-deprecating comedian made the brand feel like it was laughing with consumers instead of performing at them.

What it did

The contrast spread on its own: Semir's WeChat index hit a one-year high, more than 1,100 Xiaohongshu posts appeared within days, and the campaign repeatedly hit Weibo and Douyin hot-search lists. Agency-reported totals reached 1.6B exposures with 320M+ of user-generated reach, and JD full-store sales rose 82.3% in the season.

What you can take

When the real advantage is invisible, give it a face the category would never choose — the contrast with convention is what makes the invisible visible.

Since then

The campaign gave Semir its loudest winter in years and the 'reverse endorsement' became a case study in 2024 marketing retrospectives. The brand doubled down on the quality claim the next season: in 2025 its entire down-jacket line was upgraded to the 1000+ cleanliness standard the campaign had introduced. Agencies and commentators noted the trick of letting a comedian 'endorse the raw material' was quickly imitated, and Semir kept Xu's fluff character as a recurring piece of its winter identity.
