What it had to solve

Every year billions of plastic pill bottles end up in landfills and oceans, and small bottles cannot be recycled, yet prescription packaging must meet FDA requirements for water, light and child resistance — which is why plastic seemed unavoidable. Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness creative director Scott Carlton, who takes daily medication, knocked a row of empty amber bottles across his kitchen one morning and asked why nobody had tried paper.

How it works

Every year billions of plastic prescription bottles end up in landfills and ocean dumps, and because small bottles cannot be recycled they become toxic waste. The packaging has to survive humid medicine cabinets, keep out water and light, and stop children opening it — requirements that had locked the industry onto plastic. Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness creative director Scott Carlton confronted the problem at 6am: he took daily medication, knocked a row of empty amber bottles across the floor, and asked whether a paper prescription bottle had ever been made. It had not.

Over about two years of research, development and testing, the studio worked with Tikkun Olam Makers, the global movement of makers and innovators. Molded-pulp attempts came out as formless blobs, so the team stopped copying the cylinder and folded a hard-edged, square bottle that kept the proportions people's hands already know. Child resistance comes from hooks engineered into the cap, water resistance from a natural beeswax coating, and there is no plastic, no artificial glue and no toxic dye in the design.

The finished bottle meets FDA standards for safety and protection, and its open-source design is freely available to any pharmacy — die-cut from a single sheet, folded and assembled locally rather than shipped from a plastics factory. Recognition followed quickly: a D&AD 2021 Future Impact Pencil with enrollment in the D&AD Impact Programme, a One Show 2021 Green Pencil and Dieline's 2021 Plastic-Free Award, with D&AD framing it as a packaging idea that could revolutionise healthcare.

Why it lands

  • Starting from a personal daily ritual — Carlton's own spilled bottles — gave the designers a felt problem instead of a corporate brief about waste.
  • Treating child-safety and FDA rules as part of the material challenge forced genuinely new mechanics (integrated hooks, beeswax) instead of a paper sleeve around plastic.
  • Accepting that paper cannot be a cylinder led to a square bottle that kept only the proportions people expect, so the alternative still feels like medicine packaging.
  • Open-sourcing the design removed the sales hurdle: any pharmacy or print shop can make the bottle, so adoption depends on one die-cut file rather than a distribution network.

What it did

The bottle won D&AD's 2021 Future Impact Pencil and entry into the D&AD Impact Programme, a One Show 2021 Green Pencil and Dieline's 2021 Plastic-Free Award; because the design is open-sourced, once emptied it can be composted to enrich soil instead of joining the plastic waste stream.

Since then

D&AD enrolled the bottle in its Impact Programme and wrote about it as work that could change healthcare packaging, while One Show and Dieline added their own 2021 awards. The team treated the open-source file itself as the product: any pharmacy, maker space or print shop can manufacture it locally, and the next targets named were paper blister packs and other pill-like products. It did not displace plastic at scale overnight, but it proved the FDA's rules could be met in compostable paper — giving pharmacies an alternative ready to license.
