How it works
RADIO TIME MACHINE is an AI-powered radio device developed by TBWA\Hakuhodo for Nichii Gakkan, a Japanese medical and nursing-care services company. Instead of tuning stations, users turn the physical dial to a past year, and the device uses custom generative text and voice AI to produce period-specific newscasts and hit music on the spot.
The design operationalizes reminiscence therapy, a non-pharmacological approach that stimulates cognitive function and emotional well-being through nostalgic recall, aimed at seniors living with dementia. The familiar radio format makes the technology approachable — no screens, no apps, just a dial.
In trial deployments at Nichii Gakkan's eldercare facilities, an observational study using facial-expression analysis found a +8.7% average increase in positive expressions (smiles) during interaction and a +10.0% increase in expressive physical gestures; speech rate rose an average of 10.8 words per minute. The device is still being tested and validated at care facilities in Japan.
At MAD STARS 2026 in Busan, the work won the Grand Prix in Health Stars and was named Grand Prix of the Year across all categories. Jury members framed it as AI restoring human connection rather than replacing it — technology as a cognitive bridge between generations.
