Petronas' 'Anak Siapa Ni?' Raya film revives Malaysia's fading visiting tradition
A young man visits the wrong house on Raya and is welcomed anyway — Petronas films the fading visiting tradition, winning Silver at Kancil 2025.
Petronas
What it had to solve
Hari Raya is Malaysia's most competitive advertising season, with every brand racing to produce the most emotionally resonant festive film. Petronas wanted to cut through without surface sentimentality, finding a genuine cultural insight that connects with audiences instead of competing with other ads.
How it works
For Raya 2025, Petronas faced the same brief as every brand in Malaysia's crowded festive calendar: make a film that feels emotionally resonant without melting into the lookalike crowd. Its answer began with a cultural observation — in Malay tradition guests carry rezeki, or blessings, which is why homes are kept open during Raya — and the worry that younger Malaysians now see visiting as obligation and are quietly abandoning it.
The film, 'Anak Siapa Ni?' ('Whose son are you?'), follows Rafi, a young man who goes visiting on behalf of his unwell mother. Strangers greet him with the classic Raya icebreaker, feed him and keep him company; only at the end does everyone discover he knocked on the wrong door. The warmth survives the reveal, and the visit becomes precious anyway. Filmed against Negeri Sembilan's Minangkabau architecture with its authentic local dialect, it launched on YouTube and Facebook on 25 March 2025.
The story reframed a fading habit as something worth keeping: hospitality shown to a stranger turns out to be exactly what family visits are for. Peers agreed — at the Kancil Awards 2025 the film won Silver in Film (Online) for Accenture Song and director Ismail Kamarul, landing among the season's most recognised festive work.
Why it lands
- The wrong-house twist dramatises hospitality instead of lecturing about it, so viewers feel the insight rather than hearing it.
- Negeri Sembilan's architecture and dialect give the film an authenticity that generic festive backdrops lack.
- Making the hero an awkward young man lets the tradition speak to the exact generation that is abandoning it.
- Keeping the tone light — no melodrama, just a mistaken door — lets the deeper point land without sentimentality.
What it did
The film entered the national Raya conversation as one of the year's most talked-about festive stories, and took Silver in Film (Online) at the Kancil Awards 2025 for Petronas, Accenture Song and director Ismail Kamarul's Reservoir World.
What you can take
A festive brand film stands out when it gives a familiar ritual a fresh turn: the wrong-house joke becomes living proof of why visiting matters, instead of another retelling of the reunion story.
Since then
Petronas launched the film at a media preview alongside its wider festive social programmes, presenting it as part of keeping the visiting tradition alive for future celebrations. The Kancil Silver added to Petronas' long history in Malaysian festive storytelling, which began with celebrated works like 'Tan Hong Ming' nearly two decades earlier, and the campaign was cited by Asian marketing press as one of the Raya 2025 films that mattered.
