Xbox turns the rat race literal: a rat rediscovers his humanity through gaming

Droga5's first Xbox brand film, co-directed by David Fincher, shows an office rat in the city of Squeakattle coming back to life — only through play.

What it had to solve

Xbox wanted to deepen cultural relevance and tell everyone what the brand stands for in a world that feels designed to sedate us. Droga5's first major campaign for the brand used the cliché of the rat race as its entire creative premise.

How it works

Xbox's 2025 brand film 'Wake Up' makes the phrase 'rat race' literal. In the rodent metropolis of Squeakattle, commuter Horatio lives the numbing cycle of packed trains, office drudgery and desk lunches — until an Xbox at home reconnects him with friends and restores his humanity.

The film was Droga5's first major campaign for Xbox since becoming its global creative partner, co-directed by David Fincher and Romain Chassaing. The team built 152 practical, rodent-scaled sets, filled scenes with actors in creature-performance suits, and made every detail — even license plates — belong to its strange city.

The strategy aimed squarely at younger audiences who feel the promised life has not delivered. Within days of launch the film generated $19.4M in advertising value equivalency and a potential reach of 3.63B, and it later won a 2026 One Show Gold Pencil for Visual Effects plus Silvers for Production Design and long-form Film.

Why it lands

  • Taking the metaphor literally made an abstract feeling — modern drudgery — visible and shareable.
  • Making the human spark come from play let Xbox own the emotional payoff without saying a word about specs.
  • David Fincher's craft gave a game commercial the production weight of a film, earning it press as art.
  • Showing gamers on TVs, clouds and devices quietly made the point that Xbox is wherever you play.

What it did

The film generated $19.4M in advertising value equivalency within days, a potential news reach of 352M on launch day and 3.63B total, and won a 2026 One Show Gold Pencil for Visual Effects plus Silvers for Production Design and long-form Film.

What you can take

An ad can sell an emotion by taking its metaphor literally: once the rat race is an actual city of rats, the player's escape from routine becomes a story everyone can see.

Since then

Xbox and Droga5 continued the campaign into 2026, and 'Wake Up' became the reference point for Xbox's return to bold, unconventional advertising — fans compared it to the great game ads of the 2000s. It swept craft awards, taking One Show Gold and Silvers as well as ADC honors, and it established the 'play as awakening' idea as the brand's creative platform under its new agency partner.
