Levi's 'The Greatest Story Ever Worn' turns 150 years of 501 lore into true-story films

For the 501's 150th birthday, Droga5 made three films from true stories — a cow traded for jeans, Jamaica's denim wave, a funeral in 501s.

What it had to solve

The 501 jean turned 150 in 2023, and Levi's had just hired Droga5 to build its biggest global brand platform. With an iconic product and an equally iconic advertising history, the agency decided the industry-standard celebratory anthem would be a failure of imagination.

How it works

In 2023 the Levi's 501 jean turned 150, and Levi's had just brought in Droga5 New York to build its biggest-ever global brand platform. The agency decided the expected move — one big celebratory anthem — would not do justice to a product whose history is made of millions of individual stories.

Droga5 mined Levi's archives, newspaper obituaries and even Reddit to find around 100 true stories of 501 wearers. Three became short films: 'Precious Cargo,' about how 1970s Kingston, Jamaica imported barrels of 501s on fishing boats and exported a style back to the world; 'Fair Exchange,' about a Georgian boy who traded his family's beloved cow for a pair of jeans in 1982; and 'Legends Never Die,' about a man who asked to be buried in his 501s and for all mourners to wear them.

The films were directed by Melina Matsoukas and Martin de Thurah, shot by Bradford Young and Kasper Tuxen, and premiered during the 65th Grammy Awards in February 2023 — a nod to Levi's long history with music. The campaign continued through the year across social, out-of-home, print, events and digital, in 19 languages across 36 markets.

At Cannes 2023 the work collected three Silver Lions and two shortlists, and the year-long celebration continued with more of the researched stories told across film, social, OOH, print and events.

Why it lands

  • It treated the product's 150 years as a library of true stories, so every film carried the credibility of documented fact.
  • Choosing directors and cinematographers with serious filmmaking pedigree made anniversary ads feel like cinema, not commerce.
  • The three stories spanned Georgia, Jamaica and California, giving a global brand a genuinely global anthology.
  • Premiering at the Grammys tied the jeans' heritage to music, an audience Levi's has courted for decades.

What it did

The three launch films took three Silver Lions and two shortlists at Cannes 2023. The campaign was Levi's largest brand platform to date, spanning 19 languages and 36 markets, with 13 of the 100 researched stories told across film, social, OOH, print and events.

What you can take

When a product has 150 years of history, the archive is the brief: verified, human-scale wearer stories gave the anniversary campaign a truth a celebration film couldn't.

Since then

The campaign's three launch films won three Silver Lions and two shortlists at Cannes 2023. Throughout 2023 Levi's kept publishing stories from the research — 13 of roughly 100 found — across social, OOH, print and events, translated into 19 languages and running in 36 markets. The work became a template for heritage-brand anniversary campaigns and marked Droga5's first work for Levi's.
