IWC turns its 1976 Ingenieur flop into a cinematic legend — The Most Brilliant Failure
When Brad Pitt's green Ingenieur appeared in 'F1', IWC premiered a cinema prequel retelling how Gérald Genta's 1976 flop became a collector icon.

What it had to solve
In 1976 Gérald Genta designed the IWC Ingenieur SL, a bold integrated-bracelet watch that IWC marketed only to engineers; just 598 pieces sold before it was discontinued. Decades later Brad Pitt wore a custom green version in the film 'F1', and watch communities exploded with speculation about the mysterious timepiece.
How it works
In 1976 Gérald Genta designed the IWC Ingenieur SL, a bold integrated-bracelet watch that IWC marketed only to engineers; just 598 pieces sold before it was discontinued. Decades later Brad Pitt wore a custom green version in the film 'F1', and watch communities exploded with speculation about the mysterious timepiece.
With Scholz & Friends Berlin, IWC answered the mystery with 'The Most Brilliant Failure', premiered at the Goodwood Members' Meeting in April 2025. The short film interweaves the true story — Genta's design, engineers' rejection, just 598 pieces, collector rediscovery — with a fictional tale of the green watch passing to a racing driver.
The film was screened in cinemas as a prequel to 'F1' itself, meeting the audience where the mystery began. Instead of correcting the rumour mill, the brand gave it an origin story: coverage from Hodinkee to Vogue framed the Ingenieur as a legend in the making and renewed relevance for the whole line.
Why it lands
- The mystery was already alive online, so the film did not need to create buzz — it needed to give existing curiosity a satisfying story.
- In a luxury category obsessed with perfection, honestly retelling a commercial failure made the brand feel more authentic and more interesting.
- Screening in cinemas before 'F1' placed the story at the exact cultural moment and in front of the audience that started the speculation.
- The 598-piece history gave the campaign scarcity and romance, turning an archive footnote into a collector legend.
What it did
Instead of correcting the rumour mill, the film gave the mystery an origin story: coverage from Hodinkee to Vogue framed the Ingenieur as a legend in the making and renewed relevance for the whole line. The campaign collected ADC Germany, Clio, D&AD, New York Festivals and One Show honours.
What you can take
A product failure can become the brand story if you treat it honestly: embrace the flop, connect it to a live cultural moment, and give the audience an origin worth retelling.
Since then
The campaign renewed interest in the entire Ingenieur line, which IWC had just relaunched at Watches and Wonders Geneva, and its honours grew through the awards season with ADC Germany, Clio, D&AD, New York Festivals and One Show wins. IWC positioned the house as one that embraces misunderstood genius rather than hiding it.
