Heineken and Publicis Italy made a real Bluetooth bottle opener that closes your work apps the moment you open a beer, distributed to 48 countries.

The ideaMake switching off physical: opening a Heineken with The Closer Bluetooth opener automatically closes the work apps on your device, so the beer draws the boundary.incremental

What it had to solve

Heineken wanted to show people that switching off from work is easier than they think. The problem was that disconnecting had become a piece of advice people heard and then ignored the same evening.

How it works

Heineken wanted to show people that switching off from work is easier than they think. Publicis Italy answered with a physical object instead of another film: The Closer, a Bluetooth-powered bottle opener that automatically closes your work when you open a beer with it.

The gesture does the persuading. Open a bottle with the device and the drinker's work applications shut down, so the moment the beer is opened and the moment the workday ends become the same moment. The product itself, rather than any instruction, carries the behaviour.

The Closer was a real device distributed in 48 countries, and the D&AD awards archive preserves it under Experiential: Activation & Participation with no engagement figures. The case stands on the design of that instant: a bottle opener that makes switching off the natural consequence of pouring the beer.

Why it lands

  • Opening a beer is a ritual people already have, so the device rides on a moment that needs no explanation.
  • Closing the work apps happens automatically, so the message is performed rather than argued or remembered.
  • A working product is harder to dismiss than a slogan, and shipping it to 48 countries turned an idea into logistics.
  • The device sides with the drinker, giving the user an excuse to stop that feels like a treat rather than a scolding.

What it did

The D&AD awards archive files The Closer under Experiential: Activation & Participation and records no usage statistics. What it documents is the delivery: a real working device, not a film prop, distributed across 48 countries, so the brand's argument for switching off was something people could do rather than just hear.

What you can take

When the message is an attitude people already ignore, hand them a physical ritual that performs the attitude at the moment it matters.

Since then

The Closer's page in the D&AD awards archive, filed under Experiential: Activation & Participation, reports no before-and-after data on working hours or app usage. The documented aftermath is the object itself: a Bluetooth-powered bottle opener distributed across 48 countries that closes the user's work applications when a Heineken is opened with it, letting the brand's position on switching off be performed in one gesture.
