Google Pixel's 'Young Love' sells Live Translate as a romance, not a feature
For Pixel's launch, Wieden+Kennedy told a cross-language New York love story in which Live Translate quietly makes the connection possible.

What it had to solve
Google Pixel was about to launch a phone designed to help people, and the marquee capability was Live Translate, which translates conversations in real time; the obvious brief was a feature demo, at a moment when a pandemic had transformed how people connect.
How it works
When Google Pixel was getting ready to launch what it called its best and most 'Google' device yet, the marketing task was Live Translate — software that translates conversations in real time. The reflexive answer would have been another advert about another clever phone feature.
Wieden+Kennedy instead made 'Young Love', a short film directed by Justyna Obasi. In New York, a tenant lets a French-speaking visitor into her apartment building; neither speaks the other's language, yet a bittersweet romance unfolds as the two explore the city together, their conversations flowing through the phone's translation until they share an 'I love you' and say goodbye.
The campaign idea was that Pixel's capabilities enable connections between people — a message aimed at a world coming out of a pandemic that had transformed human interaction. The film demonstrated the feature by making it invisible: viewers feel the translation happening rather than being told it exists.
Why it lands
- The story made a translation tool emotionally legible — its value is connection between people, not the conversion of words.
- Casting the feature as the quiet mechanism of a romance proved the product without a single spec point or demo.
- It answered a post-pandemic moment when the most relevant sales argument was human connection, not novelty.
- Grounded in real characters, the film showed the feature changing an actual relationship rather than showing what the software does.
What it did
The film never lectures about specs: every beat of the story runs through Live Translate, showing a phone capability as the thing that enables human connection after isolation. The idea reframed a feature launch as a romance, and the work entered D&AD's Film discipline.
What you can take
To sell a functional feature, let it carry an emotion people already want: when the audience forgets the feature and remembers the love story, the translation tool has already been demonstrated.
Since then
Young Love ran from November 2022 as the story for Pixel's Live Translate and became a signature commercial for its director, later entering D&AD's awards archive under Film and appearing in the D&AD Annual 2023 — an example of hardware storytelling in which the feature never has to be explained because it is felt.
