Frauen aufs Podium makes Germany's gender gaps audible as two lives drift apart on air

In Germany's 2021 election year the NGO broadcast a woman and a man telling their lives in unison — then letting the gaps between them grow audible.

The ideaMake the gender gap audible: a woman and a man narrate their lives in unison, then drift apart in content and sound into unequal realities.substantial

What it had to solve

In 2021, the year of the German federal elections, the non-profit Frauen aufs Podium (Women on the Podium) wanted to show how deep the gaps between women and men still are, where they arise and what can be done about them — while the country was deciding how to vote.

How it works

In 2021, the year of the German federal elections, the non-profit Frauen aufs Podium e.V. commissioned a campaign to illustrate how deep the gaps between women and men still are, where they arise and what can be done about them.

The answer from agency +KNAUSS was to make the gaps audible rather than visible. In each piece a woman and a man simultaneously tell us about their lives. They begin in unison, but deviations soon appear and grow until the two accounts drift apart completely — both in content and in sound.

Minimal staging keeps the mechanism invisible and the hard truths in the foreground: the listener is not watching statistics, but hearing two equal life stories become unequal in real time.

Set in the year Germans went to the polls, the radio work turned a private inequality into a public question — and it was recognised at Eurobest 2021, with the case kept in the D&AD awards archive under Radio & Audio.

Why it lands

  • Two voices starting in unison make the listener expect sameness, so the divergence lands as a lived violation rather than a statistic.
  • The drift happens in sound as well as content, so even an inattentive listener hears the gap widen.
  • Minimal staging leaves nothing to hide behind: the hard truths arrive without production tricks.
  • Setting the campaign in the election year ties an everyday inequality to a public decision citizens are about to make.

What it did

An inequality that is usually reduced to figures became something to hear: two life stories start identical and split into unequal realities, timed to Germany's 2021 federal elections. The campaign was recognised at Eurobest 2021 and D&AD keeps the case in its awards archive under Radio & Audio.

What you can take

When a difference is invisible, don't describe it — perform it: start two voices equal and let the gap open in real time, and the audience hears the inequality instead of reading about it.

Since then

Gender Gaps was made for Frauen aufs Podium e.V. and ran in the year of Germany's federal elections. Eurobest 2021 recognised the campaign in its radio winners, and D&AD keeps the work in its awards archive under Radio & Audio as a reference for making an invisible inequality something an audience can hear.
