Frore AirJet (2023): a fanless chip cools laptops with ultrasonic membranes
Frore replaces spinning fans with a 2.8mm solid-state chip: vibrating membranes pull air in and fire jets at the processor, cooling fanless PCs and laptops.

What it had to solve
Laptops had cooled the same way for decades: copper heat pipes and spinning fans, or passive bodies that throttled under sustained load. Fans add thickness and noise and draw in dust, so a startup that wanted to win over makers had to offer a genuinely different cooling mechanism.
How it works
For decades laptops shed heat with copper heat pipes and spinning fans, and fanless designs simply throttled under load. Fans are noisy, thick and suck in dust, so San Jose startup Frore Systems, then backed by about $116 million, proposed a third way at CES 2023: a solid-state chip called AirJet that moves air without any rotating part.
AirJet's secret is a cavity filled with membranes that vibrate at ultrasonic frequency. The vibration creates suction — about 1,750 pascals of backpressure, roughly ten times what a fan produces — that pulls air through a dust guard into inlet vents on top of the chip. The air is pushed down at up to 200 km/h onto a copper heat spreader touching the processor, absorbs the heat, and exits sideways. The first AirJet Mini was 2.8mm thick, consumed about 1W and removed roughly 5W of heat at a claimed 21 dBA, and adding chips did not thicken a device, opening thinner, quieter, dustproof designs.
Frore showed the technology at CES 2023, and at Computex 2023 Zotac announced the $499 Zbox PI430AJ, the first commercial AirJet product: a fanless mini-PC with an Intel Core i3 that Zotac said it could not build with passive cooling alone. In side-by-side Furmark runs at Frore's headquarters, the unit without AirJet dropped to about one frame per second while the AirJet model held 9–11 fps and visibly ejected heat, giving reviewers something they could feel and measure rather than just read on a spec sheet.
Why it lands
- It attacks the root constraint of thin devices — the fan — instead of improving fans or heat pipes, so thickness, noise and dust intake all improve at once.
- Solid-state membranes create about ten times the backpressure of a fan, letting OEMs seal the only openings behind filters and build dustproof devices a fan could never offer.
- Cooling scales by adding chips, not by growing a mechanism: extra AirJets stack without thickening the device, which is exactly what thin laptops and handhelds need.
- The 2023 Zotac Pico demo made the case concrete: an identical unit without AirJet ran a Furmark stress loop at roughly 1 fps while the AirJet version held 9–11 fps.
What it did
Frore's demo ran two identical Zotac Picos through a Furmark stress loop: the version without AirJet dropped to about one frame per second, while the AirJet model held 9–11 fps with heat visibly leaving the case. The company said a single AirJet Pro could cool a 15W Steam Deck-class handheld, and later targets included gaming phones, tablets, webcams and SSD enclosures.
What you can take
When every device accepts the same mechanism, question it: replacing rotating fans with micro-machined air jets turned thin, silent and dustproof from trade-offs into design properties.
Since then
Frore's makers kept broadening the line after the Zotac Zbox PI430AJ shipped: 2023 prototypes included gaming phones, 4K webcams, SSD enclosures, doorbell cameras and LED bulbs, and in January 2024 Frore introduced the AirJet Mini Slim, a 2.65mm version with self-sensing 'thermoception' that optimises cooling without host temperature sensors. AirJet never replaced the fan across the laptop market, but it proved a third cooling path and kept winning OEM integrations for devices too small or too sealed for fans.
