What it had to solve

Alienware's Area-51m promised an upgradable gaming laptop in 2019 and was later sued over it; industry practice treats laptop GPUs as permanently soldered. Framework, known for repairable laptops, set out to make modular discrete graphics actually work.

How it works

Laptop GPUs are almost always soldered in, and the famous attempt to change that — Alienware's Area-51m in 2019 — ended in a lawsuit. On March 23, 2023, outside the Game Developers Conference, Framework announced its second laptop platform, the 16-inch Framework Laptop 16, claiming it was 'delivering on the holy grail for gamers, creators and others who need power, with modular upgradable graphics.'

The idea was architectural: instead of burying the graphics card inside the chassis, the laptop's rear is an Expansion Bay on a custom high-power PCIe interface. Slide-out modules can hold a discrete GPU, a pair of SSDs, AI accelerator chips or extended batteries, and can grow in depth and thickness to follow generational changes in mechanics, electronics and thermals.

A second system, the Input Module deck, made the keyboard and trackpad area hot-swappable: users can shift the keyboard left and add a number pad, or install proof-of-concept modules like a secondary display or LED matrix. Both systems are Raspberry Pi-based and documented on Framework's GitHub for community developers, alongside six expansion card slots.

CEO Nirav Patel said the team looked at all the reasons upgradable graphics failed before and designed for modularity across generations. The company showed a working graphics module and an eGPU enclosure proof-of-concept, invited third parties to build for the interface, and opened preorders that spring with shipping planned for late 2023.

Since then

The Framework Laptop 16 shipped as planned later in 2023 and became the reference point for discussions about upgradeable laptop GPUs and modular design. Third-party developers used the open reference designs to create their own expansion and input modules, and Framework continued the modular approach across later laptop generations, keeping the Expansion Bay interface alive as the product line evolved.
