Duolingo Max: GPT-4 explains why you got an answer wrong (2023)
Duolingo's first AI tier uses GPT-4 to explain every mistake and roleplay real conversations — a tutor-shaped product inside a game-shaped app.
Duolingo
What it had to solve
Duolingo's mission is high-quality education for everyone, but one-on-one human tutoring does not scale. With early access to OpenAI's GPT-4 from September 2022, the company spent months tuning prompts and safety guardrails to build AI features that feel like a personal tutor.
How it works
On March 14, 2023 — the same day OpenAI released GPT-4 — Duolingo announced Duolingo Max, a new subscription tier above Super Duolingo. Built with early access to GPT-4 and months of prompt and safety tuning, it was the company's first product built around generative AI.
Max shipped two features. Explain My Answer opens a chat with Duo the owl after an exercise so learners can ask why an answer was right or wrong, with examples and clarifications. Roleplay runs interactive, scenario-based conversations with the app's characters — ordering coffee in Paris, planning a trip — and ends with AI feedback on accuracy and complexity.
The product logic was to scale the tutor, not replace the app: the tier kept all Super benefits (unlimited hearts, no ads) and added the AI at $29.99/month or $167.99/year. Initially available in Spanish and French courses for English speakers on iOS, it was designed so human experts write the scenarios and review AI output to keep the tone "fun, encouraging, and occasionally snarky."
Max turned GPT-4 into a reason to pay inside a beloved free app. CEO Luis von Ahn framed it as recreating one-on-one tutoring at planetary scale, and the tier expanded to more courses, platforms and countries — making AI tutoring a recognizable consumer product category.
Why it lands
- Attaching the AI to the exact moment of confusion — right after a wrong answer — made the technology explain itself instead of requiring a separate workflow.
- Roleplay reused the app's characters and course structure, so the AI felt native to Duolingo rather than bolted on.
- Early access to GPT-4 plus months of prompt tuning let Duolingo ship the day the model launched, owning the education narrative.
- Pricing it as a premium tier monetized the AI without raising the price of the core free product.
What it did
Duolingo Max launched March 14, 2023 — the same day GPT-4 was announced — for Spanish and French courses for English speakers on iOS, then expanded across more courses, platforms and countries. It established the AI-tutor subscription as a mainstream consumer edtech category.
What you can take
When a new capability appears, attach it to the moment users already feel the need — right after a wrong answer — instead of launching it as a separate AI tool.
Since then
Duolingo Max expanded beyond the initial Spanish and French iOS launch to more courses, platforms and countries, and AI became a permanent layer of the product. The March 2023 launch is widely cited as the moment AI tutoring became a mainstream consumer subscription, and Duolingo continued building generative-AI features on the same tier afterward.
