DoorDash's Self-Love Bouquet adds a Rose toy to Valentine's roses — sold out in 4 days

DoorDash sold 11 roses plus one Rose sex toy as 'The Self-Love Bouquet' for singles — $17M gross merchandise volume, sold out in four days.

DoorDash

The ideaTake self-love literally: a Valentine's bouquet of 11 red roses and one Rose sex toy as the twelfth rose, sold same-day on DoorDash.substantial

What it had to solve

After announcing same-day flower delivery in 2022, DoorDash needed to sell flowers on the scale of Uber Eats and 1-800-Flowers for Valentine's 2023; most delivery rivals would fight over couples, yet one in four US women spent the day alone.

How it works

For Valentine's Day 2023, DoorDash sold the Self-Love Bouquet: 11 real red roses and one Rose, the best-selling female sex toy of the previous five years, arranged as the twelfth rose. It was available exclusively on DoorDash for same-day delivery in the four days before the holiday, positioning the app as the place to buy flowers for yourself.

The idea answered a strategic gap. DoorDash had announced same-day flower delivery in 2022, but to matter on Valentine's Day it had to sell flowers at the scale of Uber Eats and 1-800-Flowers. Instead of joining every other brand in the couples conversation, GUT LA targeted the one in four US women spending the day alone, turning self-love from a slogan into a literal product.

The bouquet sold out within four days. Results included 963,200 social impressions and 749 million total impressions with 39,000 mentions, $17M in gross merchandise volume, and a doubling of local florists' gross order volume to $6M. The campaign took a Grand Prix at the WARC Awards for Effectiveness 2023 and a Cannes Lions 2023 Grand Prix in PR.

Why it lands

  • Selling to singles instead of couples let DoorDash own a Valentine's conversation every rival was ignoring.
  • Making the bouquet a real purchasable product put the idea into practice instead of just advertising it.
  • The taboo around female self-pleasure gave journalists and social feeds a story with built-in reach.
  • Grounding the stunt in the 'self-love is therapy' stat made the provocation feel like advocacy, not shock.

What it did

963,200 social impressions and 749 million total impressions with 39,000 mentions; $17M gross merchandise volume; local florists' gross order volume doubled year-on-year to $6M; the bouquet sold out within four days.

What you can take

When every competitor targets the same audience on the same day, pick the ignored segment and make the product itself the statement; the artifact, not the ad, does the talking.

Since then

The Self-Love Bouquet became a reference case for product-led earned media, winning a Grand Prix at the WARC Awards for Effectiveness 2023 and a Cannes Lions 2023 Grand Prix in PR. It also helped DoorDash's same-day flower delivery grow into a serious seasonal business for the platform and its local florist partners.
