What it had to solve
Drive engagement with Delta's in-flight entertainment platform and deepen Gen Z relevance — 58% of Gen Z say music fandom is central to their identity and 82% discover new music on social media.
How it works
Delta's in-house team Window Seat produced with director Blaine Hogan of Creative Filter; the first performance, released April 3, 2026, featured Grammy-winning artist Leon Thomas; teasers ran from March 31 across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts, with cutdowns and behind-the-scenes through April and May and the series onboard from late May.
What it did
No viewership numbers at launch; the series evolved a sponsor partnership into a scalable content platform, recasting Delta as 'a creator and curator of culture'.
Background
On April 7, 2026, independent creative agency Kin announced 'Overhead Originals', a first-of-its-kind music series created for Delta Air Lines in partnership with YouTube. Rather than simply promoting the airline's October 2025 YouTube partnership, Kin identified a new offering: exclusive performances by popular YouTube Music artists, filmed inside a real Delta cabin for an intimate onboard audience, available in-flight and on Delta's YouTube channel. The first performance, released April 3, starred Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, producer and actor Leon Thomas.
The music focus came from Gen Z behaviour data cited by Delta and Kin: 41% of Gen Z SkyMiles Members attended a live music event in the past year, nearly one in five Gen Z consumers opt for 'restivals' — curated at-home music experiences — Gen Z spends 42% of audio time streaming music and 20% on YouTube music videos, 82% discover new music through social media, and 58% say music fandom is central to their identity, ranking above film, TV and gaming.
Every element was built to fuse Delta's premium brand with YouTube's creator energy — from concept to naming to visual identity — with production handled by Delta's in-house Window Seat team and director Blaine Hogan of Creative Filter. Kin, Delta's agency since 2021 with earlier original IPs like Delta Faces of Travel and Delta Locals, framed the insight simply: travel has long inspired music, and both share 'the same DNA of discovery, emotion, and movement'.
Why it lands
The cabin is the moat: any brand can sponsor a concert, but only an airline can film one at 35,000 feet for the people already seated there.
Partnership plus production beats partnership plus ads — the YouTube deal became a content platform instead of a media buy.
Gen Z's music stats made the audience case: a demographic that treats fandom as identity rewards brands that curate culture, not interrupt it.
What you can take
When a media partnership buys reach, ask what only you can produce — the venue itself, a plane cabin, is the exclusive nobody else can film in.
Since then
The series rolled out in stages from March 31, 2026 — teasers, artist reveal, full performance on Delta's YouTube — with performance cutdowns and behind-the-scenes content through April and May and the episodes taking flight onboard Delta aircraft from late May.
