Coca-Cola Korea turns the trusted Blue Ribbon rating red — Grand Effie Korea

Coke recolors Korea's most trusted restaurant rating into 'Red Ribbon' — 550 certified places on map apps, then 1,500+; top prize at Effie Awards Korea 2025

Coca-Cola Korea (한국 코카-콜라)

The ideaRecolor the trusted Blue Ribbon rating red: certify restaurants that pair with Coke, give each a Red Ribbon seal, and publish them as a guide on every map appsubstantial

What it had to solve

Coca-Cola Korea had price and distribution parity; the missing piece was cultural — being the drink at good restaurants. Blue Ribbon Survey (since 2005), Korea's first and most trusted restaurant rating book, decided where people actually ate.

How it works

Korea chooses restaurants by the Blue Ribbon Survey, the country's first restaurant rating book, trusted since 2005; a blue ribbon at the door means a kitchen worth travelling to. Coca-Cola Korea, meanwhile, had perfect distribution and universal awareness but no seat at that ritual — the drink was present in every fridge and absent from every decision about where to eat.

The campaign recast the authority in its own color. Coke and Blue Ribbon jointly selected restaurants whose food and atmosphere genuinely pair with Coca-Cola — 550 places in the 2024 list — and gave each a Red Ribbon plaque and certification sticker. The 'Red Ribbon Restaurant List' was then published inside Naver Map, KakaoMap and the Blue Ribbon site, so the mark worked where diners actually decide.

The mechanics fed themselves: merchants applied for a seal that cost them nothing but made them recommendable; consumers found the list inside apps they already open before every meal; and the positioning — 'great restaurants serve Coca-Cola' — made the brand the logical next order. In 2025 the list grew by about 600 to more than 1,500 restaurants, and eight renowned chefs staged a 'Red Ribbon Week' of special menus.

Judged on strategy, execution, consumer response and business results, the Effie Korea jury gave the campaign its top honor — the Grand Effie — in August 2025, the first time Coca-Cola Korea claimed the country's most effective campaign prize. A year later it won again, for the Coca-Cola X Sinheung Market project, the first brand in Effie Korea history to take the Grand Effie in consecutive years.

Why it lands

  • Credibility transfer: Blue Ribbon had told Koreans where to eat for nearly two decades; the red twin inherited that authority instead of spending to build its own.
  • The seal flipped the media model: merchants displayed Coke's branding voluntarily because the endorsement was worth having — owned media at zero media cost.
  • Map-app placement turned advertising into utility: the list lived in the apps people open before every meal, so the campaign kept working long after the paid push ended.
  • Verifiable fit criteria (food that pairs with Coke, strong reviews, welcoming atmosphere) kept the mark scarce and meaningful while it scaled from 550 to 1,500+ restaurants.

What it did

Restaurant owners wanted the seal, consumers used it to choose where to eat and order Coke, and the list grew to 1,500+ places with a chef-collaboration 'Red Ribbon Week'. In August 2025 the campaign took Korea's top effectiveness prize, the Grand Effie at the 2025 Effie Awards Korea.

What you can take

To own a ritual in food culture, don't fight the category's authority — borrow the most trusted institution, recolor it in your brand, and let its credibility certify where your product belongs.

Since then

Coca-Cola Korea scaled the seal into an annual institution: the Red Ribbon list passed 1,500 restaurants, added Red Ribbon Week with eight chefs' special menus, and extended into a neighborhood variant — the Coca-Cola X Sinheung Market project redesigning an 18-shop market street in Haebangchon, Seoul. At the 2026 Effie Awards Korea that sequel won the Grand Effie too, making Coca-Cola Korea the first brand in Effie Korea history to win the top prize in consecutive years; a season two with the market's merchants was announced for late 2026.
