Cadbury 5 Star erases Valentine's Day by crossing the date line — Grand Clio 2025
5 Star lets anti-Valentine fans skip Feb 14 for real: a ship crosses the International Date Line at midnight, live-streamed — 230M reached, 980K engineers.
Cadbury 5 Star (Mondelez India)
What it had to solve
Cadbury 5 Star's long-running 'Eat 5 Star. Do Nothing.' platform mocks Valentine's Day hype, and each year's campaign drew comments from people who wished they could skip the day entirely — so Ogilvy India decided to actually let them.
How it works
Cadbury 5 Star's 'Eat 5 Star. Do Nothing.' platform has mocked Valentine's Day hype for years, and each year's anti-Valentine campaign drew comments from people who found the day unbearable and wished they could skip it. In 2024, Ogilvy India took those comments literally.
The team scanned comments on past campaigns, picked the complainers, and put them on a vessel crossing the International Date Line between American Samoa and Samoa at 11:59 pm on 13 February 2024 (American Samoa time), so they jumped directly to 12:00 am on 15 February — skipping Valentine's Day entirely. The operation ran from a control room in Mumbai with satellite internet and two popular show hosts, and was live-streamed to millions; viewers could sign up as 'mission engineers' and influence decisions during the stream.
The stunt reached more than 230 million users, the launch video was reposted by over 1 million people, and 980,000 users signed up as mission engineers. It won the Grand Clio in Social Media — Other at the 2025 Clio Awards, turning 5 Star's anti-Valentine tradition into a genuinely engineered, worldwide event.
Why it lands
- It took an audience complaint — 'I wish I could skip Valentine's Day' — and fulfilled it literally, which no chocolate brand was doing.
- While rivals ran Valentine's promos, 5 Star owned the opposite stance, making the anti-holiday crowd the campaign's built-in audience.
- The physics of the International Date Line made the promise real: the ship genuinely skipped Feb 14, so the claim was not a metaphor.
- Live-streaming with audience-controllable mission engineers converted passive viewers into participants, hence 980,000 sign-ups.
- It was an annual tradition reaching a crescendo, so hype from previous years compounded into expectation for the stunt.
What it did
The live stunt reached more than 230 million users, with 1 million+ reposts of the launch video; 980,000 people signed up as mission engineers; it won the Grand Clio in Social Media — Other at the 2025 Clio Awards.
What you can take
When an audience begs for an impossible outcome, take them literally: actually engineering 'skipping the day' turns a repeated joke into a one-off live event people join.
Since then
Erase Valentine's Day became the biggest expression yet of 5 Star's anti-Valentine platform and took the Grand Clio in Social Media — Other at the 2025 Clio Awards. The brand continued the tradition the next February with 'Destroy Valentine's Day', enlisting 'uncles' to take part in Valentine's activities, keeping the annual ritual going while other chocolate brands ran conventional holiday promotions.
