British Airways' 'A British Original' runs as a campaign where no two ads are the same

British Airways celebrated the customers, staff and nation behind it with a campaign built so no two ads are alike, then renewed it for a second year.

What it had to solve

British Airways wanted to celebrate the customers, employees and nation that make the airline what it is. A claim that big needed to feel true in the work itself, not just in the words, and airline advertising tends to look interchangeable.

How it works

Airlines advertise in ways that are easy to swap between carriers, and British Airways wanted a campaign that felt unmistakably its own. The chosen idea was that the airline is made by originals — its customers, its employees and the nation behind it — and the work had to demonstrate that originality rather than merely claim it.

The launch campaign therefore ran as a system in which no two ads were the same. Each execution celebrated a distinct person, place or reason to travel, so the variety of the work became the evidence for the claim: an airline of originals makes advertising that is itself original. The campaign continued into 2023 with a new series exploring unique, contextual moments, executed with playful art direction and motion that leaned on writing and design.

The result was a brand platform that could keep producing fresh executions without repeating itself, because the premise — everyone travels for their own original reason — is inexhaustible. The D&AD awards archive keeps the campaign in its writing collection; the page records no audience or sales numbers.

Why it lands

  • 'No two ads the same' turns the claim into a visible property: the variety of executions demonstrates originality instead of asserting it.
  • Celebrating customers, employees and the nation gives the airline an identity rooted in Britain that no rival carrier can copy.
  • The 2023 follow-up shows the system is durable: unique contextual moments can generate new executions without inventing a new idea each time.
  • Writing and design — among the oldest advertising skills — carry the craft, so the work reads as a modern classic rather than an effects demo.

What it did

The 'no two ads the same' rule made individuality the form of the campaign as well as its message, and the system proved durable enough to generate a second year of executions. The D&AD awards archive keeps the work; the page records no reach or sales figures.

What you can take

When the message is that everyone is original, make the production system prove it: a format in which no two ads are alike carries the argument better than any slogan could.

Since then

A British Original kept its value as a system: a second year of executions flowed from the same premise, exploring new reasons people travel and new contextual moments. The D&AD archive page holds the campaign with a gallery of the work, and the record shows no metrics — what survives is the format decision that one-of-a-kind people deserve one-of-a-kind ads.
